(600+ reviews on the web)
Architectural Building Religious Site
Originally built in the year 990 on the order of Archbishop Willigis, Kath. Pfarramt St. Stephan now features Marc Chagall-designed stained-glass choir windows. Created in the late 1970s through 1985, the windows depict of Bible scenes. You'll find nothing else quite like them in Germany. This structure offers a counterpoint to the Mainz Cathedral, which Willigis also had constructed. Few intentional changes have been made to this church since the 14th century. However, it required extensive rebuilding after World War II bombing. Plan to visit Kath. • Marc Chagall's stained glass is definitely a must see when in Mainz. It is better to visit it on a shinny day, if you are lucky enough.  more »
  • Marc Chagall's stained glass was a marvellous revelation in the ancient church, tucked away just outside the shopping area of Mainz. Well worth a trip to see.  more »

  • Absolutely stunning as a unique blue tint falls on the whole cathedral. Unlike any i had seen. Worth a stop.
  • A must see if you are in Mainz. Windows designed and made by Chagall and are all in shades of blue. See if you can go when the sun shines bright.
  • Excellent. The Chagall windows are amazing and so is the courtyard. The detail in the stained glass is breathtaking and tell a number of the Bible stories. The courtyard enhances the light of the day and is worth spending some time looking at.
  • The Church of St. Stephan is a very special building. I'm not religious, but I bring friends here like to on their first visit to Mainz. The atmosphere is very special for a church. The blue Chagall window show the building in a mystical light. It's almost like the air would glow blue. I can recommend the lead if it results in the tower. From there, it has a very beautiful view over Mainz.

  • Really great. Wies Church but this is unforgivable personally. Take the S8 from Frankfurt, one way 40, three hours 10 minutes to go away.
