Church of St. Stephan, Mainz
(4.8/5 based on 550 reviews on the web)
Originally built in the year 990 on the order of Archbishop Willigis, Church of St. Stephan now features Marc Chagall-designed stained-glass choir windows. Created in the late 1970s through 1985, the windows depict of Bible scenes. You'll find nothing else quite like them in Germany. This structure offers a counterpoint to the Mainz Cathedral, which Willigis also had constructed. Few intentional changes have been made to this church since the 14th century. However, it required extensive rebuilding after World War II bombing. • This is a spectacular church, but everything is in German (of course). So, we wish we had even an English brochure to know what we were looking at. Beautiful place, though
  • Only 10 minutes from the Cathedral on the first hill above the city centre the gesamtkunstwerk Stephansdom is located. The Catholic parish church, probably at the end of the 10th century started and almost completely destroyed in World War 2, is always worth a visit because of the beautiful Chagall window. It is the last, stained-glass Windows created by the artist before his death. For all nine Windows, the black lot paintings are from his hand. The colors, especially the blue, shine and attract visitors of all ages. The best come when the Sun appears in the morning from the East and is immersed in the Church in unbertrefflicher colours. Events from the Bible are shown mainly from the old testament. For visitors who are not familiar, a guide is almost mandatory. Please contact the Parish Office, Tel: 06131 231640 or their E-mail address. Who has great luck, followed by a meditation of Monsignore Mayer. It is him, that the devout Jew Chagall was ready to create this miracle of humanity in Germany.

  • A must see if you are in Mainz. Windows designed and made by Chagall and are all in shades of blue. See if you can go when the sun shines bright.
  • Excellent. The Chagall windows are amazing and so is the courtyard. The detail in the stained glass is breathtaking and tell a number of the Bible stories. The courtyard enhances the light of the day and is worth spending some time looking at.
  • 藍色玻璃非常漂亮!
  • Beautiful church. Absolutely worth visiting. In particular the beautiful Chagal Windows dip the Interior during sunny weather a great blue. On Sundays from 12:10 h (after mass) one can attend ca 30 min lecture on the history of the Church and the window free one. Worth it!
