Church of St. Stephan, Mainz
Categories: Architectural Buildings, Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Originally built in the year 990 on the order of Archbishop Willigis, Church of St. Stephan now features Marc Chagall-designed stained-glass choir windows. Created in the late 1970s through 1985, the windows depict of Bible scenes. You'll find nothing else quite like them in Germany. This structure offers a counterpoint to the Mainz Cathedral, which Willigis also had constructed. Few intentional changes have been made to this church since the 14th century. However, it required extensive rebuilding after World War II bombing. A must see if you are in Mainz. Windows designed and made by Chagall and are all in shades of blue. See if you can go when the sun shines bright.
Excellent. The Chagall windows are amazing and so is the courtyard. The detail in the stained glass is breathtaking and tell a number of the Bible stories. The courtyard enhances the light of the day and is worth spending some time looking at.
