Südfriedhof Leipzig, Leipzig

#2 of 6 in Parks in Leipzig
Südfriedhof is, with an area of 82 hectares, the largest cemetery in Leipzig. It is located in the south of Leipzig in the immediate vicinity of the Völkerschlachtdenkmal. The Südfriedhof is, along with the Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg and the Südwestkirchfriedhof Stahnsdorf in Berlin, the largest park-like cemetery in Germany.HistoryThe plans for the cemetery began in 1879. Initially it was created on an area of 54 hectares. Responsible for this were the horticultural director of Leipzig, Otto Wittenberg and the architect Hugh Licht. The conduct of ways is in form of a linden leaf, which reflects the Slavic name of Leipzig "The Town of the Linden", and fulfil the aims of Art Nouveau as a Gesamtkunstwerk. With the rapid development of the city during its industrialisation, incorporation of nearby settlements and the consequent steady population growth a new cemetery was needed. On 1 June 1886 the Südfriedhof was opened by Mayor Otto Robert Georgi after the Nordfriedhof (North Cemetery) was opened in 1881. Shortly after, the first burial was made and the grave is still preserved in the I. Division. However, this burial ground was very unpopular at first. Many citizens of Leipzig chose to be buried at the Neuer Johannisfriedhof (New St. John's Cemetery) but this changed when it began to fill up and the trees on the Südfriedhof became greater and the proposed park character was recognisable.

  • Even though it seems odd about a cemetery to walk, this is really worth. Located next to the battle of Nations monument you can enjoy here the silent alone.

  • After the visit to the neighbouring peoples battle monument, we looked at us still the South cemetery. You get a good overview of the extensive grounds of the observation deck of the peoples battle monument, especially the crematorium building in the eye stitch here. Even if it was very sunny and hot at the time of our visit, the numerous trees offering shade. The plant is not like a typical cemetery, but rather gives the impression of a park. We hiked an hour through the Green, you would have around but can easily run half a day. Therefore you should allow plenty of time for this landmark located at a Leipzig-visit.

  • Who wants to go for a walk alone. This cemetery, which has impressed me even more than the Vienna's central cemetery offers an incredible variety of trees, birds and plants. Here, there are about 1000 rhododendrons, so we must necessarily return to their flower

  • Beautiful regular park. It is quite place with a lot of historical monuments.
  • Honestly one of the most beautiful places on earth, whether you are interested in graveyards or not. Directly beside volkerschlachtdenkmal so it's hardly out of the way.
  • Beautiful and quiet graveyard in the centre of Leipzig, if you visit the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, come over as well for a smal walk.
  • Great place to be put to rest.
  • In addition to the Hamburg Ohlsdorf cemetery and the Southwest cemetery in Stahnsdorf near Berlin, Leipzig southern cemetery - the cemetery of South is one of the largest park-like cemeteries of in Germany. Absolutely worth seeing and it architecturally a real highlight.
