St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche), Leipzig

(4.7/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche) is most famous for being the resting place of composer Johann Sebastian Bach. It's also where he worked as a choir director. Reformer Martin Luther preached here on Pentecost Sunday in 1539. Today, it is a Lutheran church. In the sanctuary, study the portraits of superintendents of Leipzig. The oldest dates back to 1614. Note the stained-glass windows. One is a portrait of Bach, and another is Felix Mendelssohn. Outside the church, look for the statue of Bach. • This place probably visited every tourist happening in Leipzig. Very nicely. Great body (or rather several). You will not regret!

  • We visited the new year's Eve church service with a Bach´schen organ concert and singing of the world-famous Thomaner choir. This is probably also every Friday and is strongly recommended and a special experience. Caution: adjust be sure in time, the Church contains nearly 2000 visitors and it should happen that one is no longer allowed. The building itself is definitely worth seeing, but not outstanding. The Church lives by the Thomanerchor, which keeps samples on different days in the Church.

  • Beautiful Church where the great Johann Sebastian Bach is buried. Free entry. If you have the chance to see the Thomanerchor don't lose it.
  • Very nice church, free to visit, with Bach's grave.
  • Another must visit on your Leipzig trip! Come for a concert and listen to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and see the place where he lived and worked.
  • Final resting place of J. S. Bach, with frequent musical and other events.
  • Impressive and serene. Make sure to head inside and visit Johann Sebastian Bach's grave.
