Architectural Building Religious Site
St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche) is most famous for being the resting place of composer Johann Sebastian Bach. It's also where he worked as a choir director. Reformer Martin Luther preached here on Pentecost Sunday in 1539. Today, it is a Lutheran church. In the sanctuary, study the portraits of superintendents of Leipzig. The oldest dates back to 1614. Note the stained-glass windows. One is a portrait of Bach, and another is Felix Mendelssohn. Outside the church, look for the statue of Bach. • Thomas Church next to the Nikolai church certainly is the most famous Church of Leipzig, both played a major role in the events of the reunification. Admission is free and open daily from 9 am to 18: 00. Due to the large number of visitors, a visit would recommended, in the late afternoon, because you can watch the Church in much calmer atmosphere then. Friday at 6: 00 there are admission for 2 euros an approximately 1-hour Motet with the Thomanerchor in the liturgical form of the Vespers. Thus, you have a very inexpensive way to listen to this world-famous choir.

  • What an amazing historical and architectural site! From Bach's tomb to the unification of Germany this is a must see historical site. Beautiful architecture which is hard to find post WWII. The acoustics in the building are fantastic as they play the organ. For only a euro admission this is great. There is a great small music museum with many old texts and instruments. You can really feel the significance of this building while exploring, I'm not too much of a spiritual person but this place sure made me feel something. Beautiful place to visit and absolutely essential to any music lover.
  • Humble setting despite all the visitors that this Church gets. Tomb of Bach is inside and highly recommend attending a service to hear the choir if time permits (though note that all programme/speeches are in German only).
  • went here as a tourist and had a chance to hear and watch lovely choir.
  • The feeling being even outside the church is just overwhelming. Don't miss the tomb of J S Bach inside! The accoustics are fabulous.
  • Very nice church with lots of history. Besides the concert you can catch an organ practice session every now and then which is also very interesting.
