St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche), Leipzig

4.6
#2 of 16 in Historic Sites in Leipzig
Admire a late Romanesque wooden crucifix, the oldest piece of art in the city, at St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche). Built in the 12th century and enlarged in the 16th, the church blends Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Marvel at the interior's mighty columns (designed to resemble palms) and ornamental ceiling. Admire the 30 paintings by Leipzig local Adam Friedrich Oeser. The church rose to fame in 1989 during the Monday Demonstrations' peaceful protests against communist rule. • As one of the oldest churches (if the records, are not the oldest - inconclusive) Church has in addition to its moving, centuries old history and coinage of the city image to offer even more. Take a look into it. The interior design is not quite typical of Church. During the last renovation, the design was chosen bright and happy. The pillars carry Palm fronds and to symbolize the entrance to paradise. Of course, the Church also for some other reason is famous: as the cradle of the peaceful revolution. A moving story that is also in the vicinity of the Church. See the fountain next to the Church not just as well. Doesn't he look, like a barrel, which runs over? At dusk, consider the patch; It begins to glow. Only one or two stones, then always more... Does that sound familiar? See this church not just as "a House of God". It is much more!
