Trausnitz Castle, Landshut

4.4
#1 of 17 in Things to do in Landshut
Steeped in history and offering unbeatable views of the city, Trausnitz Castle was built in the 13th century and once served as the official seat of the hereditary rulers of Bavaria. The castle is mostly noted for including the so-called "chamber of art and curiosities," a room that can best be described as the precursor of today's museums. The castle's renowned chamber contains works of arts, treasures from the Orient, and curiosities typical of the collections owned by rulers in the Renaissance era, such as small carvings of plum stones, stuffed animals, minerals, corals, and scientific instruments of the 15th century. Several of the castle's grand rooms can be booked for special events and are often used for conferences and concerts. Check online for opening times and available guided tours. • A colleague has ramped me kindly. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed. So I left the castle on foot after a tour the old city.

  • Very well preserved, I arrived late and thus couldn't make it to the inside, but the castle complex, walls and park are very beautiful as well. Highly recommend solo travellers to walk around with som...  more »
  • The lady has spontaneously entered on our desires (time, interests) and showed and great views from the Castle at night on the town. All questions were answered individually. Thank you for an exceptional experience with our foreign guests, who were very enthusiastic.

  • Great place to visit around Christmas time as there was a Christmas market in the courtyard of the castle. Overlooks Landshut. Good spontaneous visit. You will have to park a good 5-10min walk from the entrance. When I arrived, the parking near by the castle was closed for the Christmas market workers. Don't forget the museum through the visitor center, containing artifacts and old relics - free with entrance fee. Enjoy.
  • Visitin Trausnitz Castle with two little children was very nice experience. The castle is in very good condition and view from the castle is exceptional.
  • Looks impressive from below and inside. Got a cafe inside, with patchy opening hours though.
  • German only tour, but you can get an English read a long pamphlet, regardless it is a beautiful place and fantastic tour even if you only know a little German
  • Castle and Landshut town a great visit. Tour of castle only in German. English reading guide available.
