Koenigstein Fortress, Koenigstein

4.6
One of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe, Koenigstein Fortress is an architecturally and historically significant building. During its more than 750 years, the fortification featured late Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and 19th-century architecture. Its 50-odd buildings, some more than 400 years old, are testament to the civilian and military life of the fortress. For centuries, the structure was used as a state prison, but today it is home to an open-air museum that documents the history of the castle, with exhibitions on the old armory, the garrison church, the cellars, and the treasury. • The fortress-Express, it saves the laborious climb to the fortress. Once at the top expected a a wonderful views of the Elbe Valley and the Elbe sandstone mountains. The fortress itself offers much to walk along the paths of history.

  • Beautiful fortress in Germany, away from the Czech border. :) The price of admission is good. If you park down in the city, and pleasant walk.

  • It was a day well spent! As we went in winter it was quiet and we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. The walk from the carpark to the fortress was lovely. We purchased our tickets at the e...  more »

  • I've been to this fortress for the second time in a year now and it's still interesting to walk through the exhibitions. The breathtaking view is still a great photo opportunity even when it's foggy as the fortress is above the fog. Transportation: Special Bus: There is a bus from Königstein to the fortress (every 30 minutes.) It's 5€ per person for two trips from Königstein to the fortress (and back.) There's a so called "fun train" that takes you from the parking garage to the fortress. If you take the special bus from Königstein, this is included in your ticket. Car: In the winter months it's hard to find parking spots in the fortress's parking garage. If you want to use the parking garage anyways, it's 5.50€ for four hours. Make sure you have change to pay for that. The paying machines only accept German debit cards and small cash (as shown on the picture.) Walking up to the fortress from the parking garage usually takes 15 minutes. There is also an elevator to use to get to the actual exhibitions (with no extra cost.) Pro tip: I recommend the Christmas market up there. It's really crowded after 12 so you should go up before then.
  • Absolutely amazing!! They make the arrival easy with a nice parking garage (5.50€ for four hours) and then the fortress is a 15 min walk up. It’s pretty steep and can be quite slippery! Once at the top, entrance was 10€ and well worth it for the views of the surrounding countryside. Wandered quickly through the museums and other artifact displays, but I have to be honest... I was just blown away by the views. I’m sure the audio tour and real tour are just as good. Favorite tidbit: one of the kings made a point of weighing his guests before and after their stay, and if you gained weight that meant you ate and drank well! Some guests gained as much as 5 kg in a few days’ stay... :)
  • What beautiful place. Made more magical by the snow and the Christmas market. I can't wait to come back and see the views on a clear day. The entry is a very small for such a huge place. It has s fabulous history too
  • A pretty fortress. Visited it during rain & snow (Th 21.12.2017). There's a nice little pub there - it can keep you warm.
  • Amazing place with beautiful views. The place is worth to spend a day there
