Festung Koenigstein, Koenigstein

4.5
#7 of 57 in Historic Sites in Saxony
Castle Tourist Spot
One of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe, Festung Koenigstein is an architecturally and historically significant building. During its more than 750 years, the fortification featured late Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and 19th-century architecture. Its 50-odd buildings, some more than 400 years old, are testament to the civilian and military life of the fortress. For centuries, the structure was used as a state prison, but today it is home to an open-air museum that documents the history of the castle, with exhibitions on the old armory, the garrison church, the cellars, and the treasury. Plan your visit to Festung Koenigstein and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Koenigstein vacation route planner.

  • a trip to the fortress you can connect to the Bastei (more on my review of this place). What to the fortress, the parking costs 5.50 euros, bring together a luggage receipt, because the payment will be in slot machines from the fortress. Approach under the fortress takes about 10 or 15 minutes, so not worth it to use transport. Admission costs 10.00 euro, but it is worth it to spend. The fortress is a huge, impressive Gates alone. After entering the central square, I recommend immediately refer to the right to see more than 150 m well. In the middle there is a restaurant with good food and beer. The walls boast amazing views. One piece of advice, if you want to know about the history of the fortress, they either pay for media guides or prepare a reference sheet.

  • In this trip to Germany, which for the most part went to Saxony, was one of the key places that really wanted to visit! Childhood impressions of her are preserved from numerous films, including the famous Soviet film "Mikhailo Lomonosov". Produces a Grand impression, particularly species from the fortress of the surroundings and the famous bend of the Elbe! Raised by an elevator, near multilevel parking (surcharge), nowhere else to park. During our walk watched the strongest rain and Rainbow after him with bastions-the impression is stunning! Were this afternoon did not notice as the clock struck 18 long chime bells! It turned out it's not just so! Within a few minutes the fortress is empty all the exits were closed, we miraculously managed to take the elevator down with the latest staff and liftjor locked elevator Hall and too left))) in the fortress itself very interesting composition! There is a section dedicated to the stay of Russian troops during the first world war, pay attention to it!

  • Beautifully restored fortress, which looks very impressive from the Valley. Super organization and good prices. It's also great that are organized events here in the summer.

  • The Park House is modern, but too expensive for my taste. A few smaller shops (ice cream store, souvenir shop, etc.) is located on the parking lot. Very nice, that motorcycle riders free parking may ;)
