Felsenkirche, Idar-Oberstein

4.4
#1 of 10 in Things to do in Idar-Oberstein
A protestant church built into a crag that rises above the town, Felsenkirche is an emblem of the small city. Before the structure was consecrated as a church, it served as a fortress that protected the people of the village below during attacks. The outer edifice hides a series of caves that can accommodate more people than appears from the outside. To reach the museum housed inside the castle church, you'll take a tunnel that was added to make it easier for visitors to tour the building. • The Rock Church is almost a "landmark" for me. Unusual and especially at the same it is not to see!

  • You can see the Rock Church of many points in the city, because it is somewhat elevated in their niche. Directly above it is the ruins of the Castle Tinks. The rise of the city goes through some steps and is sometimes quite steep - then it goes through a tunnel in the Church. Inside, there is something to see, but the view of the city is the ultimate. But a very nice idea to add a church on the site.

  • One of the highlights in town. The stairs might be a bit challenging if you are not a bit fit :). But it’s worth the effort. Beautiful and charming small church!  more »

  • I was there in 1977 man it has changed before it was just a small room with about 6-8 benches and a small alter. Bare walls just like a cave I love it
  • Out of all of the Chapels I have visited around the world, this is probably one of the most amazing. The view is absolutely breathtaking and the history regarding this is so interesting. I'm glad that I was able to visit this place before I left.
  • Amazing place with amazing story. A must see.
  • From the outside, sticking them impressively on the rocks and is built since the 15th century in him. To get in, one must go through a tunnel in the rock. From the inside, she is somewhat modest. The observation deck affords a wonderful view of Idar-Oberstein. Definitely worth a visit.
