Schauinslandbahn, Horben

(4.5/5 based on 95+ reviews on the web)
The Schauinslandbahn is a gondola lift in the Black Forest area of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It links a lower station in the municipality of Horben, near the city of Freiburg im Breisgau, with an upper station near the summit of the Schauinsland mountain. The line is operated by VAG Freiburg, the city transport operator for Freiburg. The same company operates that city's tram and bus network, including bus route 21 that links the lower station of the Schauinslandbahn to the terminus of tram route 2 at Günterstal. At in length, the line is reportedly the longest gondola lift in Germany. It was the first suspended cable car in the world to provide continuous operation of multiple cabins, as opposed to the shuttle style operation of the aerial tramway.HistoryIn the first years of the 20th century, several proposals were made to link Freiburg to Schauinsland. The extension of city tram route 2 on segregated track to Günterstal in 1913 was intended as the first section of a high speed tramway that would connect with a proposed rack railway to the mountain's summit. Other proposals included an aerial cableway, proposed by Professor Georg Benoit of the University of Karlsruhe, and a much longer adhesion railway from Freiburg Hauptbahnhof via Schauinsland to Todtnau. The outbreak of the First World War stopped any further progress on these plans.

  • This Gondola is a great way to take in the beautiful sights. Once at the top the views are awesome. There is a nice café to get a bite to eat. It's well worth the admission.
  • i loved this place in -10 degrees with snow allover the place, far blue horizons at the height of almost 1200 m. From the turm, the lil houses felt like toy structures in snow. Looking forward for see...  more »
  • Tram line 4 and the connecting bus line 21 reached the stop directly valley station. From there, you float in less than 15 minutes directly on the Schauinsland. A restaurant with outdoor terrace is located on the mountain station. The Outlook for a cup of tea is awesome! The Schauinslandturm made of wood and steel located within walking distance. Be sure to take photo. In cold weather scarf, hat and gloves to remember, because sometimes the wind whistles already quite well.

  • If you are around Freiburg, then 30 min drive here to the top of the mountain is really worth it. Then you need to climb further up 15-20 min and then take some 31 meters up the tower to enjoy the views of Freiburg and all the surroundings.
  • If you come to Freiburg, you have to do the cable cart to Schauinsland. We didn't plan on spending the entire day on the mountain, but we did. Just looking all around us at the most amazing views.
  • Google has the wrong street address, the gps location (top of gondola route, not start) and the website. The gondola is great but Google should fix its info, or at least someone who knows the correct info should.
  • This is is one of the excellent place in Freiburg
  • A good place where you can enjoy the nature view.
