Ammersee is a Zungenbecken lake in Upper Bavaria, Germany, southwest of Munich between the towns of Herrsching and Dießen am Ammersee. With a surface area of approximately 47km2, it is the sixth largest lake in Germany. The lake is at an elevation of 533m, and has a maximum depth of 81m. Like other Bavarian lakes, Ammersee developed as a result of the ice age glaciers melting. Ammersee is fed by the River Ammer, which flows as the Amper out of the lake. Like neighbouring Lake Starnberg, which is similar in size and shape, it is a popular location for watersports.Ammersee and the Amper are part of the ancient Celtic amber trading route leading to the Brenner Pass. The word Ammer is a 13th-century form of Amper, the Celtic *ambra, deriving from the Indo-European *ombh-, *mbh- "wet, Water".Passenger services have operated on the lake since 1879. Today they are operated by the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt company, using a mixture of historic paddle steamers and motor ships.EcologyThe lake's water generally has been of very good quality since a circular sewerage system was introduced in the 1960s collecting all wastewater from around the lake and transporting it to a treatment plant below the lake's outlet at Eching.

  • Dießen am Ammersee is a municipality in the District of Landsberg am Lech, Bavaria and is located at the southwestern end of Lake of Ammersee. To make clear that it is the Bavarian Dießen, called the place formerly often referred to as Bayerdießen. Walking, cycling and water sports are possible here. Dießen has approximately 10,000 inhabitants and a nice pedestrian area to stay and shop.

  • We found a parking right on the Lake in Herrsching and ran from there to the Lake. Great views and great atmosphere. Some have bathed in the late-summer temperatures, or enjoyed a boat trip on the Lake. The Lake is some premises that offer food and drinks at rather high prices. Who wants to enjoy Bavarian specialities and thereby on the lake view do without, should visit the Guest House to the post in Herrsching.

  • What prior knowledge to no, the weather was nice to just walk around the Lake, and there it is. Is almost resort only to Germany, but breakfast good enough. You can on a lake where the Sun and sunsets are neither. Is perfect for comfortable travel.
