Ammersee is a Zungenbecken lake in Upper Bavaria, Germany, southwest of Munich between the towns of Herrsching and Dießen am Ammersee. With a surface area of approximately 47km2, it is the sixth largest lake in Germany. The lake is at an elevation of 533m, and has a maximum depth of 81m. Like other Bavarian lakes, Ammersee developed as a result of the ice age glaciers melting. Ammersee is fed by the River Ammer, which flows as the Amper out of the lake. Like neighbouring Lake Starnberg, which is similar in size and shape, it is a popular location for watersports.Ammersee and the Amper are part of the ancient Celtic amber trading route leading to the Brenner Pass. The word Ammer is a 13th-century form of Amper, the Celtic *ambra, deriving from the Indo-European *ombh-, *mbh- "wet, Water".Passenger services have operated on the lake since 1879. Today they are operated by the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt company, using a mixture of historic paddle steamers and motor ships.EcologyThe lake's water generally has been of very good quality since a circular sewerage system was introduced in the 1960s collecting all wastewater from around the lake and transporting it to a treatment plant below the lake's outlet at Eching.

  • CONCLUSION: Herrsching is a trip value. The lakeside promenade offers almost Mediterranean flair. Location: Herrsching is located on the East side of the Ammersses and thus has more Sun than the West side with E.g. Dießen and Utting, especially during the winter months, when the Sun is quickly deep. When visibility is good, if you look to the Ammer mountains. In various parking lots can be parked free of charge 13: 00 from Saturday (mill fields Street). Where: the closer to the Lake, the sooner will mo - so from 9 am 6 pm a parking ticket due. Enjoyment: The lakeside promenade stretches promenade way almost a kilometer about themselves by the bus stop in the spa park with Park Chateau. There are to put enough possibilities on a bank or the seawall, to enjoy an ice cream or coffee. Here you can let your soul dangle a bit and when the first warm rays of the Sun in March, everything seems to be on the way.

  • I've been here about 5 times, in the summer it is a wonderful relaxing place for rest, the wharf, with a lot of kaváren....to all in a very short time, thanks to the direct connection of S-Bahn to the center of Munich. In December, it also has its charm ... absolute tranquility, silence. After a long walk, I recommend a glass of something stronger.

  • The Lake can be pretty rough with high waves, else can you find pure recreation during the summer at the Uffer. You can ride a bicycle but also around the lake or jog.
