Ammersee, Herrsching am Ammersee

(4.7/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Ammersee is a Zungenbecken lake in Upper Bavaria, Germany, southwest of Munich between the towns of Herrsching and Dießen am Ammersee. With a surface area of approximately 47km2, it is the sixth largest lake in Germany. The lake is at an elevation of 533m, and has a maximum depth of 81m. Like other Bavarian lakes, Ammersee developed as a result of the ice age glaciers melting. Ammersee is fed by the River Ammer, which flows as the Amper out of the lake. Like neighbouring Lake Starnberg, which is similar in size and shape, it is a popular location for watersports.Ammersee and the Amper are part of the ancient Celtic amber trading route leading to the Brenner Pass. The word Ammer is a 13th-century form of Amper, the Celtic *ambra, deriving from the Indo-European *ombh-, *mbh- "wet, Water".Passenger services have operated on the lake since 1879. Today they are operated by the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt company, using a mixture of historic paddle steamers and motor ships.EcologyThe lake's water generally has been of very good quality since a circular sewerage system was introduced in the 1960s collecting all wastewater from around the lake and transporting it to a treatment plant below the lake's outlet at Eching.

  • We drive more often from Munich to Lake Ammersee mainly for swimming, sailing, or just to walk. Here you can relax and unwind. For swimming and sailing, we go mostly to Utting, but also the Andechs Abbey is located on Lake. Nice Bavarian Lakes is that here no motor boats may go, so it's not so loud. The water is clean and the lounge areas are fine.

  • Herrsching is still the quirligste place on the Ammersee, otherwise it is yet quite introspective in the villages around the most rural of all Bavarian Lakes. So chic such as Lake Wörth and Lake Zurich, the Ammersee will never become. Looking for Schickimickis and party-goers here in vain. Can bathing in many places. Hardly another Lake in Bavaria is as accessible as the Ammersee. The onion spires, the many sailboats and the Bavarian maritime vessels are defining image here. For decades, the paddle steamer "Diessen", the "MS Utting", the "MS Herrsching" and the "MS Schondorf" have shaped the image on the Lake. Now only the "Diessen" remains of the four ships, and there are many childhood memories of that time just waiting for old photos. One has the most beautiful views of the Lake during the one-hour hike hügelauf and long book by Stegen. This is ideal especially for dog owners. Who's here complaining that the Lake is not a good time for dog owners may please his journey but a small little information.
