Ammersee, Herrsching am Ammersee

(4.6/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Ammersee is a Zungenbecken lake in Upper Bavaria, Germany, southwest of Munich between the towns of Herrsching and Dießen am Ammersee. With a surface area of approximately 47km2, it is the sixth largest lake in Germany. The lake is at an elevation of 533m, and has a maximum depth of 81m. Like other Bavarian lakes, Ammersee developed as a result of the ice age glaciers melting. Ammersee is fed by the River Ammer, which flows as the Amper out of the lake. Like neighbouring Lake Starnberg, which is similar in size and shape, it is a popular location for watersports.Ammersee and the Amper are part of the ancient Celtic amber trading route leading to the Brenner Pass. The word Ammer is a 13th-century form of Amper, the Celtic *ambra, deriving from the Indo-European *ombh-, *mbh- "wet, Water".Passenger services have operated on the lake since 1879. Today they are operated by the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt company, using a mixture of historic paddle steamers and motor ships.EcologyThe lake's water generally has been of very good quality since a circular sewerage system was introduced in the 1960s collecting all wastewater from around the lake and transporting it to a treatment plant below the lake's outlet at Eching.

  • We had planned an einwöchingen holiday with dog at Lake Ammer / the five lakes plate. It unfortunately deteriorated to a steeplechase. During the summer months (mid-April to October) a dog under threat of penalty never in water, sometimes not even on the riverbanks. Of course taking regard for bathing guests, children, disposed of his legacies, holds somewhere... but him on a leash would you even go for a walk with his dog. On question one explained to us, that that is so in almost all bachvantiep. Its lakes we must confirm unfortunately (tries we had it at the Starnberg Lake, Wörthsee, Pilsensee) all lakes have gorgeous, crystal clear water, all lakes are you until some bathing places private face to runs on walks so frequent along the road. Unfortunately disappointing! One tip for dog owners: the Bayr. Seenschifffahrts GmbH takes dogs against a small fee on their ships, so that we could - enjoy the water at least from a boat with dog on a steamer!

  • We were late August / early September on Lake Starnberg. Then, we made the trip to Lake Ammersee. Here, it is much quieter than in Starnberg. Who calm searches is better off on the Ammersee. Really great area. Cycling around the Lake drive, and to stop and a beer in the beer garden drinking. Herrlich. There is much to see castles and beautiful Straände Lake. Take towel + swimwear and pure water. Great refreshment. Temperatures in the Lake were 21 degrees, so wäremer than in the Baltic Sea :-) Four seasons you can recommend hotel. Have a nice holiday!

  • Calm seas with stony ground, surrounded by many bars and small clubs. Recommended: smoked fish (all fresh and tasty)
