Studentenkarzer, Heidelberg

(4.2/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
Established in the 1600s as a kind of prison to punish misbehaving students, Studentenkarzer and places like it were prevalent at many German schools until the beginning of the 20th century. Eventually, the punishment became almost a rite of passage among students and turned into more of a social event filled with the sort of debauchery that had once caused a student to land here. Wander the rooms to see the poems, writings, musings, or stories scrawled on the walls, along with the paintings, drawings, and doodles left by the marauding students. If you can read German, you might even be able to pick out a story or two left behind by a student explaining just what he did to end up here. • I was a little bit disappointed entering this little museum. It is only 4 rooms where you can only see graffiti on walls of this kind of Jail for the rebel students in the Heidelberg University. We ar...  more »
  • Very impressive and quite many impressions. Should you visit only in conjunction with a guided tour. Unfortunately also quite crowded in the aisles. A better visitor management would be useful.

  • Have a visit to the student lockup I am presented not very exciting. However, in the end he was more interesting than I would have expected. Also if you look at a few rooms in the end effect, so you can lose himself in it to read what is everywhere so written. With a little imagination you can empathize back with the time in which students were locked up there. You yourself saw seemingly not so closely. At least let the wall labels are unaware. This worth a visit, especially since he also doesn't take long.

  • Heidelberg is a famous university city and its university has been established since 14C, which is the oldest in Germany. There was once a student prison in 19C to punish the university students who had contravened some public orders. They would then put in jail from 2 days to 2 weeks. But many students took it as a refuge from lectures and spent their time for making poems and graffiti on walls.
  • Surprisingly interesting place, providing a glimpse of past student life in a great university
  • Very special and interesting place
  • Very strange and nice place to visit
  • Historic place with a lot of things to see in the museum
