Studentenkarzer, Heidelberg

Categories: Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.1/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web
Established in the 1600s as a kind of prison to punish misbehaving students, Studentenkarzer and places like it were prevalent at many German schools until the beginning of the 20th century. Eventually, the punishment became almost a rite of passage among students and turned into more of a social event filled with the sort of debauchery that had once caused a student to land here. Wander the rooms to see the poems, writings, musings, or stories scrawled on the walls, along with the paintings, drawings, and doodles left by the marauding students. If you can read German, you might even be able to pick out a story or two left behind by a student explaining just what he did to end up here. • Make sure to get the audio guide. The visit actually includes the university museum and Great Hall as well as the student jail. The cost is 3 Euros.
  • Absolutely worth watching, if you are interested in the early days of the students. The murals and inscriptions are unique and still top get. The entire building is worth seeing, and if you have a guide, which tells the story of the time it's very interesting to go.

  • The lockup, hidden in a side street is a unique phenomenon which is worth visiting. Wisdom and painting on the wall give a little insight into the tradition of Karzers.

  • Heidelberg is a famous university city and its university has been established since 14C, which is the oldest in Germany. There was once a student prison in 19C to punish the university students who had contravened some public orders. They would then put in jail from 2 days to 2 weeks. But many students took it as a refuge from lectures and spent their time for making poems and graffiti on walls.
  • Surprisingly interesting place, providing a glimpse of past student life in a great university
  • Historic place with a lot of things to see in the museum
  • It is interesting

  • There is a combination ticket with the old and the new Auditorium. The lockup with its soot and shadow cracks is found in countless Heidelberg films such as the Heidelberg romance. On the ground floor, you get souvenirs such as pencils and clothes. Not only the Japanese love the old glory of the student...
