Create an itinerary including Student Jail (Studentenkarzer)
Established in the 1600s as a kind of prison to punish misbehaving students, Student Jail (Studentenkarzer) and places like it were prevalent at many German schools until the beginning of the 20th century. Eventually, the punishment became almost a rite of passage among students and turned into more of a social event filled with the sort of debauchery that had once caused a student to land here. Wander the rooms to see the poems, writings, musings, or stories scrawled on the walls, along with the paintings, drawings, and doodles left by the marauding students. If you can read German, you might even be able to pick out a story or two left behind by a student explaining just what he did to end up here. • Visited here thinking we could also see the University Library, big mistake! Given a time slot to visit 30 mins later, we paid 4 euros each and returned for a visit which took us less than 10 mins...

  • This "jail" is part of Heidelberg University (est. 1385) and it is quite unique. It is small but worth a visit: do book in advance, as tickets are limited (€3) and go fast.

  • It's a fascinating space, but only truly enjoyable if you understand German (or have a particularly accomplished interpreter with you!) and can thus decipher the sometimes incredibly amusing and witty messages on the walls. Pro Tip: the entrance ticket is also good for the University Museum around the corner, where one can admire the magnificent Alte Aula.
  • The place is very small although it is kind of interesting.
  • The place is so cool and costs 3 euro to go to this, and the old university. There's also a museum, but it's only in German. You have to get one of those guilted tour earbud things to listen to it in other languages
  • Some cool doodle on the wall, not too big place
  • Worth a visit while in town. Cheap entry for students and didn’t get locked in at the end of the trip ;)
