Stroll down the scenic north banks of the Neckar river along Philosopher’s Walk. Named for its solitary and romantic charm, the riverside path is as one of Heidelberg's iconic landmarks. Here, you'll find views of the city's historic old town and the Heidelberg Castle. Meander through the surrounding gardens, or venture farther up the path: On the mountain, you can visit an 11th-century monastery and remains of a Celtic fort. If you time it right, you can sit outside at the hilltop cafe to enjoy the sun setting over the old city skyline. • Before walking through the philosopher's way, I read through some blogs on why it is called so. From those sources, I learnt an interesting fact that the doctorates and the professors in the university created this path and they would often walk this path for a break and for new idea. If you ask me, it really does give a perspective. It's take a 1 hour walk to finish it up and down. On the way, you can catch a lot of breathtaking views of the castle and the bridge.
  • On a sunny day this would have been a much more beautiful walk. We, however, thought to make it an evening stroll. Then it started to rain. Not too heavy. Just enough to get us wet and "the way" wet. Again, that would have been Okay, except for the steps at the east end were now wet and it was dark and we only had cell phone lights to illuminate the cobblestone steps. So my suggestion to you is to plan your walk when it is not raining, not too humid and not dark. Enjoy the marvelous vistas of the river and town.
  • It's quite the mini "hike" - its an incline and will make you sweat. Wear some good shoes if it's raining - otherwise, good luck~! Beautiful views and a few stopping points along the way. It's a bit touristy - but overall, best way to see Heidelberg
  • Really nice hike through the mountains. If you take the entire trail you will end up at a brewery that gives free tasting
  • Great sight from Heidelberg. Really worth crossing the river and climbing some steps to enjoy the beautiful sight.
