Market Square (Marktplatz), Heidelberg's main square, buzzes with activity and is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Stroll through the platz, soak up the atmosphere, and admire some of its most important buildings, such as the Church of the Holy Ghost and the town hall. Pop into some of the small shops that line the square to pick up local crafts as souvenirs. Grab a seat at a terraced restaurant or bar, sample a hefeweizen beer, and people-watch. Markets are held here on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Put Market Square (Marktplatz) on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Heidelberg vacation planner.

  • I have almost 40 years ago, studied in Heidelberg and lived on the market square. The weekly market has not changed in the course of time – the time seems here to be left! Not this historical ambience, where you could feel comfortable actually, there would be no reason to seek them out. In a city with so many green voters, it has until today not done brought to offer a selection of organic products from the region from this market - town marketing or not there? -Because I'm rather going to REWE or Edeka. Too bad, Heidelberg wake up!

  • Fun time walking around the area and enjoying the old buildings and scenery but it is also very touristy.
  • Magnificent plaza, next to the Lutheran Church and the Town Hall. It is striking the stalls selling souvenirs on the walls of the Church, but is not Catholic and then understand it. In the city, in the morning, you will always see a wedding. Very spacious and comfortable visit.

  • Great place to rest your legs and have a drink, nice atmosphere surrounded by the old houses
  • Great Christmas market. Not too crowded. Wonderful ice skating rink!
  • I was here in July 2015 with my family. This plaza has a lot of shops and stores here. We got some crepes with Nutella. This place is close to the bridge by the river and also to the entrance to the tram that takes you up to the castle.
  • Nice square. A bit dark due to dark stones.
  • Nice place, especially in the summer to enjoy a beer.
