Named in honor of the man who constructed it, Carl Theodor Old Bridge (Alte Brucke) stands as one of Heidelberg's most iconic landmarks. Admire the bridge's nine giant sandstone arches and its massive ornate gate. Wander from bank to bank of the Necker river for camera-ready views of the old city's churches, spires, and fortress. Keep an eye out for the statues--one is Carl Theodor--along the bridge. Don't miss the tribute to the former resident "bridge monkey" on the south bank. The bridge was partially destroyed by the retreating German Army in 1945. Extensive efforts to repair it included original materials. • It is a "must go" place in can have a good feeling walking there and have a good look to the city.
  • From the bridge you have great views of the Neckar River, the Castle and the surrounding hills. Highlight: a bronze animal figure holding a disk is available before the popular bridge. You touched this disc, expected a wealth in abundance. So be sure to go :)

  • Love the bridge and history as well as the views of the river and the castle. Be sure to walk across to the other side and then come back through the gate to the old city.
  • I have fond memories of this brucke. Many days and nights spent around here. The views are lovely and the history is immense. The monkey by the bridge tower is fun.
  • Great views of the castle, the river, and the city from here. The bridge feels magical, like it stepped right out of another century, especially against the backdrop of the mountains and castle. Must see if you're visiting Heidelberg!
  • A nice old bridge which fits well into the picture of the old town of Heidelberg. Cross it to get to the Philosopherweg and Heiligenberg on the other side of the river.
  • One of the top tourist attractions in Heidelberg, but you didn't need me to tell you that, did you? Great spot for taking (portrait) pictures of (with) the castle.
  • Here, you can take a lot of great pictures of the city and the castle. Nice view
