This very large cemetery, which represents a cultural monument first ranges for Heidelberger and visitors with its magnificent plant, its very old grave sites, his Prominentengräbern, his Jewish part is located in the middle of the city. Quiet contemplative walks on the hillside up views of magnificent ancient mausoleums, simple graves, tree burials - plans and maps help with orientation. Mountain cemetery but is not a solely historical place, but is used by the Heidelbergern permanently for new tombs.

The mountain cemetery, Heidelberg main cemetery, has many beautiful and sometimes very old graves. Even guided tours of the cemetery on various topics are offered. There are also graves of celebrities, as well as a Jewish part of the cemetery. Everything is really worth watching and worth a walk.

You should consider the hillside during the visit. Sturdy footwear is recommended. Information panels are repeated for orientation on the site. Famous people from science and research, as well as politicians and artists have found their final resting place here. The trees, the gravestones, sometimes thanks to the special atmosphere - the hillside location, this cemetery you must see.

  • www.visitcemetery.eu Stands for beauty among the 17 cemeteries of Heidelberg. His name translated is "Mountain Cemetery." We are talking about a cemetery unwonted dated 1844 and definite structure. Spread over 15 hectares of land, the cemetery houses more than 17,000 graves. The real peculiarity, which leaked the name, nature, hard and overbearing, rises and merges with the cemetery itself, by steep paths that reach a length of 20 kilometers to terraced slopes and hairpin bends. All this echoes the romantic vision of Johann Christian Metzger, promoter of an architecture "green" cemetery, in order to offer visitors a unique visual and olfactory sensory experience. The structure is irregular, bounded on the North by a disused railway line and crisscrossed by footpaths to guide the visitor in the visit to the most important personalities buried there. There are two known funerary monuments, one in memory of victims of AIDS (a black granite Obelisk) and another for children born prematurely. Resting here characters known as the sociologist Max Weber and the poet Friedhric Gundolf.

  • Beautifully situated graveyard directly on the mountain with many beautiful itineraries. The pathways are downloadable on the homepage. Who wants to go to famous graves (Furtwängler, Ebert, Wankel, Bunsen...) is right here. It is also a good book about this cemetery, for all HDler who are their history interested in ideal.

Where to stay in Heidelberg

Most of the city's lodging is centralized near Altstadt, the Old Town. Here cafes, shops, and tourist sites line the cobbled streets. Many of the guesthouses here work hard to retain the area's historical feel.
