Guttenberg Castle (Burg Guttenberg), Hassmersheim
(4.5/5 based on 30+ reviews on the web)
Admire the perfectly preserved medieval architecture and the scenic surroundings of the Neckar valley at Guttenberg Castle (Burg Guttenberg). Dating back to the 12th century, this structure is one of just a handful that has never been destroyed, and also boasts the distinction of having belonged to the same family for over 500 years. As you pass the outer ramparts and enter the castle, you'll be transported to the Middle Ages at the on-site museum. Learn about the history of knighthood and have a seat in the medieval tavern, where you'll be served by maidens and squires in authentic costumes. One of the site's main attractions is the bird show staged twice a day, when trained vultures, eagles, and other birds of prey circle over the towers. You can marvel at the feathered creatures up close at the castle's aviary. There's a separate fee for each attraction, but you can buy a combined ticket at a reduced price. • It's been crazy, the road runs through the Castle, you feel transported to another time suddenly in one. We were in the late afternoon there, the birds of prey show ran already and we visited only the Castle. Affectionate, informative and interesting life in the Castle, in the Museum, which moved through many rooms of the castle to the main tower, was described. Very great and understandable for children. At sunset, we were on the Tower, fantastic views. On the way back to the Castle courtyard, we had still a gruesome encounter, which complete the charm of the old building. At the end of our tour, yet the Falconer with a large owl, about the way ran us. It was a successful afternoon.

  • The Greifenschau with flying display and the Castle Museum are good for a trip. The Castle Tavern hosted dinners for groups.

  • A fantastic day out. The combination of great views, the historic castle and museum would be plenty to recommend it but then an amazing bird show as well makes it a really special place to visit. I am Australian who lived nearby for a few years and took all our overseas visitors there. We have been there more than a dozen times.
  • There is so much to explore here! Burg Güttenburg is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon walking around and enjoying the walkways and vistas of a very nice castle. The bird show was fantastic! It was great to see such amazing birds both up close and in flight. The drive to the Burg was also very scenic (as are most road trips in Germany).
  • Well done bird of prey show. In German, but still very interesting for non German speakers. The Castle itself is a museum and the view for the top of the tower is worth the climb. Great afternoon for the family. There is also nice restaurant/cafe with great views of the valley.
  • It is a very nice place with lots of birds and a museum. Make sure the restuarant is open before you come if you want to eat
  • Fabulous birds and fantastic displays
