U-Bootmuseum U-434, Hamburg

3.7
#9 of 38 in Museums in Hamburg
Offering a rare chance to experience the harsh living conditions inside the tight corridors of a Soviet submarine in operation during the height of the Cold War, U-Bootmuseum U-434 is now open to the public as a museum exhibit. Once the largest hunting and espionage submarine in the world, the Russian submarine was built in 1976 and remained in service until 2001. The vessel spent many years patrolling the North Sea, operated by a 78-man crew. Today, the submarine is docked on the edge of the city's harbor, providing a peek behind one of the most impressive vessels of its time. This shows the number one enemy of the allied forces. This caused so much havoc and almost won the war. This gives you the feel how it was to be cramped and operate a war ship. You must see the past  more »

Guided tour in German in an old Russian spy submarine. It is interesting to hear about life aboard a submarine. Not for people with claustrophobia and physical challenges-particularly the back and knees. There is very narrow, and we must move through the small hatches and round up the narrow metal ladders. Are you fresh on the challenge, it's a fun and successful experience. I think the price is excessive, particularly if you have to have a tour, but it is difficult to do without if you must have a good yield of the visit, because there is no information to be had in the submarine. I visited the submarine with a 13-year-old. He thinks it was great.

I visited the submarine with a friend a while ago and it was an exciting experience. You can get a good picture of life under the sea. A museum to the touch. Only the entry seemed somewhat expensive. But it's worth. When do you ever get the chance to see a real submarine from the inside.

Where to stay in Hamburg

The most dynamic part of the city is the St. Pauli area, also known as Kiez. This is where tourists and locals brush shoulders among the many bars, shops, and sites. Jungfernsteig, or Neuer Wall, is an upmarket area with brand name shopping and luxury dining. Consider a stay in the bohemian quarters of Altona or the Sternschanze/Schanzenviertel. These areas burst with character and offer out-of-the-ordinary shopping and dining experiences at lower prices.
