St. Petri Kirche, Hamburg

4.4
#6 of 17 in Historic Sites in Hamburg
Enter St. Petri Kirche to see important examples of religious art from the 15th and 17th centuries. The church's tall bell tower looks across the city of Hamburg, while its iconic lion-head door handles greet visitors entering the west wing. The Gothic structure dates to the 12th century, though much older religious buildings formerly occupied the site. Although its exterior is rather unimpressive, the building houses several major artworks, including a mural from the 15th century. Two oil paintings by artist Gottfried Libalt represent well-known biblical scenes, including the birth of Christ. Carefully restored after a devastating acid attack in 1977, these pieces represent major expressions of religious art produced in the 17th century. Visited the Church just to see the city. Entrance-3 euro, must go through the store inside the Church. Very cute woman inside speaks English. Narrow spiral staircases, wooden stairs, only 544 steps-and you upstairs. The playground is closed, quite narrow. Ideal to inside there were not more than 3 persons. The truth is that I liked more views from the first level with round Windows. Under each have information so that you can see and brief history (in German and English)

The stunningly simple, magnificent and monumental interior has to be experienced to be believed. Perhaps the most impressive I have ever seen  more »

  • A must-see in Hamburg. The architecture is not as spectacular as the of St.Michel Church. However, the bell-tower offers a spectacular view over the city center. Hardly any building in Hamburg can have this view.
  • Good place for praying.
  • Fantastic view from the tower. Not many people know about the opportunity to climb it. It's city center, from there you can see almost everything...
  • Nice to visit and great looking from the outside.
  • Great church

Where to stay in Hamburg

The most dynamic part of the city is the St. Pauli area, also known as Kiez. This is where tourists and locals brush shoulders among the many bars, shops, and sites. Jungfernsteig, or Neuer Wall, is an upmarket area with brand name shopping and luxury dining. Consider a stay in the bohemian quarters of Altona or the Sternschanze/Schanzenviertel. These areas burst with character and offer out-of-the-ordinary shopping and dining experiences at lower prices.
