St. Petri Kirche, Hamburg

4.4
Enter St. Petri Kirche to see important examples of religious art from the 15th and 17th centuries. The church's tall bell tower looks across the city of Hamburg, while its iconic lion-head door handles greet visitors entering the west wing. The Gothic structure dates to the 12th century, though much older religious buildings formerly occupied the site. Although its exterior is rather unimpressive, the building houses several major artworks, including a mural from the 15th century. Two oil paintings by artist Gottfried Libalt represent well-known biblical scenes, including the birth of Christ. Carefully restored after a devastating acid attack in 1977, these pieces represent major expressions of religious art produced in the 17th century. • Who need a break from the power shopping on Mönckebergstrasse, should make a visit to the Church of St. Petri. St. Peter is the oldest church in Hamburg city. Founded in the 11th century she is a haven of tranquility. Particularly worth seeing the bronze Türzieher worked as a lion's head. Recommendation.

  • Saw this church on my way to Rathaus. This is one of the several churches in the neighborhood. The highlight of this church is its magnificent architecture and the pattern seen in its construction.
  • We climed up to the tower on a sunny day. It was very hot inside and there was no air movement in the tower. There were only small round glass windows to look around. At the top level there is room only for 2-3 people.
  • Most people come here for the climb to the top of the tower - for 3 euros per person. The church itself is a beautiful and peaceful place. Unlike other churches in the area it is free to get in to and look around.
  • Serene. Perfectly situated.
  • I heard the beautiful song performed by a small choir at this church last year. was so touched.
