St. Petri Kirche, Hamburg

Categories: Churches, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 160+ reviews on the web
Enter St. Petri Kirche to see important examples of religious art from the 15th and 17th centuries. The church's tall bell tower looks across the city of Hamburg, while its iconic lion-head door handles greet visitors entering the west wing. The Gothic structure dates to the 12th century, though much older religious buildings formerly occupied the site. Although its exterior is rather unimpressive, the building houses several major artworks, including a mural from the 15th century. Two oil paintings by artist Gottfried Libalt represent well-known biblical scenes, including the birth of Christ. Carefully restored after a devastating acid attack in 1977, these pieces represent major expressions of religious art produced in the 17th century. • It is a Lutheran Church, very bare compared to a Catholic Church. Like all Hamburg, almost completely destroyed during the second world war, is a fairly recent construction.

  • like many Protestant churches in Northern Europe has great artistic beauty but as a whole are very pleasing and pleasant to visit, in any case, the big building and the tall Bell Tower (which I have visited). One of the locations in the Centre of Hamburg to be missed.

  • Nice to visit and great looking from the outside.
  • Really nice to visit.
  • Fantastic view from the tower. Not many people know about the opportunity to climb it. It's city center, from there you can see almost everything...
  • Wow!
  • One of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. A 1st visit. of May. There was a chorus that was the most sensitive and mystical atmosphere. Full of emotion. One of the most important days of my life next to JMG.
