St. Pauli, Hamburg

Neighborhood
Located near the river Elbe's port, St. Pauli is home to the red-light district of Hamburg and known for its daring nightlife--but during the day, it is a hip and interesting neighborhood. Leave the Reeperbahn, the main thoroughfare, if you'd like to see another side of the area. Populated by many students, artists, and immigrants, the neighborhood has a diversity that gives it its eclectic and cosmopolitan character. Walk the streets the Beatles did when they lived here, or catch a game of the local St. Pauli soccer team at the stadium. Explore the smaller side streets to find budget-friendly eateries and bars. The neighborhood is gaining popularity, and gentrification is taking hold, so safety is not a big problem, despite the seedy nature of the area around the Reeperbahn.
