St. Pauli, Hamburg

3.0
#5 of 8 in Neighborhoods in Hamburg
Neighborhood Tourist Spot
Located near the river Elbe's port, St. Pauli is home to the red-light district of Hamburg and known for its daring nightlife--but during the day, it is a hip and interesting neighborhood. Leave the Reeperbahn, the main thoroughfare, if you'd like to see another side of the area. Populated by many students, artists, and immigrants, the neighborhood has a diversity that gives it its eclectic and cosmopolitan character. Walk the streets the Beatles did when they lived here, or catch a game of the local St. Pauli soccer team at the stadium. Explore the smaller side streets to find budget-friendly eateries and bars. The neighborhood is gaining popularity, and gentrification is taking hold, so safety is not a big problem, despite the seedy nature of the area around the Reeperbahn. • A horrendous set of brothels and sex shops from the last century. It does not have the slightest charm. Better yet: have one: out of there, and take the subway in Sankt Paulí beautiful station, with its entrance Art Decó. Other, more old fashioned than Formula V.

  • We went on a "free" tour of St Pauli. For older, non-party folk this was a good way to hear about the past significance of the place and to see what it is now. We saw the Fish Market area as well as t...  more »
  • Whoever said in Hamburg of gäbs not much to see, is wrong. Hamburg is full of surprises, and some refrain from Hanseatic restraint. We were stood up really early Sunday morning to go to St. Pauli Fischmarkt. So, who knows the Mediterranean markets, find here not much new. However, the bear quilts in the old fish auction Hall. From the classical Frühstückscroissant with coffee (consumed by the few), up to the morning pint with beer in streams and fried potatoes with fried eggs or the delicious mandatory fish sandwiches in all variants (listening encouragement) in a Carnival mood, from 7 o'clock in the morning, here everything. The atmosphere heated up powerful Foxie B., the band that rocked from the 70s and 80s. Dance 8: 00 early I'm now not so used, it was just fantastic, we saw the craziest shapes, including a punk Grandma, who brandished her walking stick instead of the dance leg... For a beautiful retro Sunday morning. Suuuuper!

Where to stay in Hamburg

The most dynamic part of the city is the St. Pauli area, also known as Kiez. This is where tourists and locals brush shoulders among the many bars, shops, and sites. Jungfernsteig, or Neuer Wall, is an upmarket area with brand name shopping and luxury dining. Consider a stay in the bohemian quarters of Altona or the Sternschanze/Schanzenviertel. These areas burst with character and offer out-of-the-ordinary shopping and dining experiences at lower prices.
