St. Michael's Church, Hamburg

4.5
#3 of 17 in Historic Sites in Hamburg
The emblematic 132 m (433 ft) Baroque spire of St. Michael's Church is completely covered in copper. For centuries, this prominent feature of the city's skyline has been a landfall mark for ships sailing up the Elbe river. Relatively simple outside yet surprisingly opulent inside, the church features a large bronze statue above its main entrance showing Archangel Michael conquering the devil. Be sure to enter the crypt, which has an exhibit narrating the city's long history. Try to plan your visit for a sunny day for the best views from the church's tower. You'll find easy access by stairs or elevator. This city landmark hosts frequent concerts and other cultural events. The church is quite interesting. Its style is rather different from the big cathedrals of Europe. There is also a tower and a crypt, be we did not see those.  more »

We had the opportunity to listen to the organ music. An experience that was a highlight of the visit. In the nave are among others beautiful altars. The tower is a real highlight. Athletic take the stairs, the other the high-speed elevator. Once above, weather with a view, you don't back down, the views in all directions are so great. With Michel app, you get extensive information about the Church during the tour.

  • This is probably the most famous church of the city and can be viewed from a distance. It has three large church organs; one of which is really huge. As with all churches in Hamburg, the architecture is really impressive. There is a statue of Martin Luther outside the church.
  • The best church tower in town to look around. There is even a lift for the not so fit tourists. At the top there is planty of space. You can buy tickets from the machine, you don't have to queue if you prefer to pay by card. I think the crypt is not so interesting.
  • Saint Michael's Church is one of the city's most famous buildings. Its baroque architecture is stunning. The views of the city from the top are great. However, there are many churches of the same kind in Germany as this one isn't particularly outstanding.
  • Hamburg's most beautiful church, just a short walk from the harbourside. Nice views from the top. A must see!
  • Breath-taking. They also offer/accepts salts of the world - if that makes any sense haha

Where to stay in Hamburg

The most dynamic part of the city is the St. Pauli area, also known as Kiez. This is where tourists and locals brush shoulders among the many bars, shops, and sites. Jungfernsteig, or Neuer Wall, is an upmarket area with brand name shopping and luxury dining. Consider a stay in the bohemian quarters of Altona or the Sternschanze/Schanzenviertel. These areas burst with character and offer out-of-the-ordinary shopping and dining experiences at lower prices.
