Create an itinerary including St. Michael's Church
The emblematic 132 m (433 ft) Baroque spire of St. Michael's Church is completely covered in copper. For centuries, this prominent feature of the city's skyline has been a landfall mark for ships sailing up the Elbe river. Relatively simple outside yet surprisingly opulent inside, the church features a large bronze statue above its main entrance showing Archangel Michael conquering the devil. Be sure to enter the crypt, which has an exhibit narrating the city's long history. Try to plan your visit for a sunny day for the best views from the church's tower. You'll find easy access by stairs or elevator. This city landmark hosts frequent concerts and other cultural events. Make St. Michael's Church a centerpiece of your Hamburg vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Hamburg online route planner.

  • Beautiful and well restored location. Extremely clean and pleasant. Free to go into the main hall and a small price to pay that is definitely worth it to climb the tower (or take the lift) and dive into the crypt. Also hosts information about the church and those buried under it.
  • Visited for a night view of Hamburg. Highly recommended. Did not expect what area you can see from the top of the tower. For sure tower include the lift but we did it by the stairs. when you climb the stairs you can see the engine room of the clock, which is very interesting.
  • Magnificent church in a baroque style. Beautiful organs. It takes a while to access the elevator going on top of the Tower but it is quite worth it. The access to the elevator is not accessible and you have to climb down the 452 steps (as of October 2021). Entry was 6€ without entrance to the crypt
  • The church is a beauty. While visiting, there was a choir rehearsal that we enjoyed very much, somehow enhancing the spiritual atmosphere of the place. We climbed up the clock tower and the views of the Elbe, Hafen City were really something to remember. This is a MUST do when visiting Hamburg.
  • 10,50€ with Hamburg card, is quite a lot for one elevator ride. View is stunning tho. Would not recommend to be up there when the bells go off, but at night the sight is amazing! 7€ would be enough tho.
