4.5/5 based on 2,200+ reviews on the web
The emblematic 132 m (433 ft) Baroque spire of St. Michael's Church is completely covered in copper. For centuries, this prominent feature of the city's skyline has been a landfall mark for ships sailing up the Elbe river. Relatively simple outside yet surprisingly opulent inside, the church features a large bronze statue above its main entrance showing Archangel Michael conquering the devil. Be sure to enter the crypt, which has an exhibit narrating the city's long history. Try to plan your visit for a sunny day for the best views from the church's tower. You'll find easy access by stairs or elevator. This city landmark hosts frequent concerts and other cultural events. • Carl peak in Hamburg, not just for tourists. It is especially beautiful on the Tower in the dusk or evening hours, when the city to nocturnal life awakens. There is a beautiful panoramic view over the Harbour and the city, it provides insight into otherwise not to backyards and whets the appetite to see more of the city. During our visit, a service was held. Very impressive, and this still the Beethofen sang chorus Hamburg. Was a deep worship and could inspect the Church from within. Later from the Tower, we saw a reflection in the opposite glass-enclosed high-rise. So watch and enjoy. An unforgettable visit seen as a whole.

  • My son told me to go and visit this. It is just beautiful inside . I loved seeing the beautiful pews. You see these less and less as they are taken out and replaced by chairs. It's just very tastefull...  read more »
  • Nice building, great/church spire. Very large and fascinating Church figures. Located next door to the great little Cafés with delicious variety of food and beverages pause.

  • Beautiful view all over the city. There is lift to the top of tower, but you should go down by stairs to look around inside tower.
  • The tower climb was worth the view! But unfortunately the bells began to ring when we climbed the stairs down right next to us. That was very unpleasant. I warning upfront would be nice!
  • So I went on a foggy day and paid €5 for the viewing tower and couldn't see a thing... This was entirely my own stupidity! I can imagine that the views would have been good. Lift access pretty much the whole way up or the stairs for the more adventurous...
  • A must for anyone visiting Hamburg. Take a trip up thr tower for an amazing view of the city. There is also a dungeon tour that will provide some more info around the history of the church.
  • Beautiful church. Try to get on top of it.
