Open for more than a century, Panoptikum - Das Wachsfigurenkabinett holds court as the oldest wax museum in Germany. Get up close to more than 120 figures, including political ones like Barack Obama, religious ones like the pope, and personalities from art and music, such as the Beatles and Mozart. Popular culture is represented, too, with characters like Harry Potter. A separate section holds the museum's original works, designed to educate people with displays about widespread diseases. This section is kept separate for those who would prefer not to see graphic displays. Unlike many museums of this kind, flash photography is permitted. • Wax figures that look almost like real, never made, also the descriptions and the whole drumherrum, and should the walk man of the stories told to borrow with anyway, there is a historical experience for themselves here in any case...

  • We were at the exhibition today and we very liked. The price of admission is €6.50 for an adult moderate. Well, we liked the descriptions that the audio-guide to the figures provided. We've learned to back one or the other new. The tour was very entertaining and was interesting until the end.

  • Thisn is an old fashionjed type of wax museum - a bit like a smaller version of Madame Tussaud's before it became super trendy. This museum has people who had to do something to become famous or of hi...  more »

  • A nice place to see some famous people. A visit won't take too long, but it is interesting to see and have some photos take with some well known people.
  • Panoptikum is the cheaper version of Madame Tussauds. With lots of semi realistic wax figures from politician, artist, musician, performer or even movie scene with characters etc. Worth visiting, is cheap and nice.
  • Is a very nice place
  • Brilliant historic exposition
  • Loved it

Where to stay in Hamburg

The most dynamic part of the city is the St. Pauli area, also known as Kiez. This is where tourists and locals brush shoulders among the many bars, shops, and sites. Jungfernsteig, or Neuer Wall, is an upmarket area with brand name shopping and luxury dining. Consider a stay in the bohemian quarters of Altona or the Sternschanze/Schanzenviertel. These areas burst with character and offer out-of-the-ordinary shopping and dining experiences at lower prices.
