HafenCity, Hamburg
(4.2/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
HafenCity is the largest rebuilding project in Europe at 2.2 sq km (.85 square mi). Set for completion between 2020 and 2030, the project involves converting old port warehouses into offices, hotels, shops, official buildings, and residential areas. Visitors who enjoy city planning and innovative architecture can take a guided tour now via bike or foot. You'll see the International Maritime Museum of Hamburg, the Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall, and the Science Center. A change in European Union laws lessened this area's importance as a seaport, leading to the repurposing. Put HafenCity on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Hamburg itinerary builder.

  • This is a very interesting area of old warehouses and channels between them. Now many buildings-museums and cultural centers. Very interesting to walk on it.

  • Wandered through the area looking at all the old buildings and boats. Watched the passenger boat turning around and picking up its customers near the Elbphilharmonie.
