Deichstrasse, Hamburg
(4.2/5 based on 160+ reviews on the web)
Take a stroll along Deichstrasse, the oldest street in Old Hamburg. This canal-side street dates back to the 14th century and sits adjacent to the Speicherstadt, the city's warehouse district. The picturesque houses were built in the 18th century and have miraculously survived the Great Fire of 1842, the renovations waves of the early 20th century, and even World War II. Revel in a piece of Hamburg's rich history, and stop in at one of the many traditional restaurants and boutiques that line the Nikolaifleet port. • It was here that the great fire of 1842 broke out and swept large parts of Hamburg. There are signs on the houses, who tells the story. A restaurant has taken the name after the event-it's called Zum Brandamfang. Nice little street with some of the best preserved old houses in Hamburg. See also the houses from the Canal side.

  • Couldn't believe it, there's still an old city in Hamburg. It is really just a street. It is worth to schedule a break in one of the restaurants there after Speicherstandt or HafenCity. We very enjoyed it.
