Chile House, Hamburg
(4.4/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
Brick Expressionism personified, Chile House was constructed using nearly 5 million bricks, making the structure so heavy that special footers had to be designed to support the foundation. Shaped like a ship's prow and rising impressively against the sky, the ten-story office building is a photographer's dream. Commissioned by shipping magnate Henry Sloman, who made his fortune trading saltpeter from Chile (hence the name), the building is famed for its facades, which meet at very sharp angles at the corner of two very busy streets. Despite its enormous size, the building's accentuated vertical elements and recessed upper stories give it a touch of lightness and timeless elegance. Be sure to walk through the various entryways; each one is differently embellished with figures designed to look like groups of people and animals. Put Chile House into our Hamburg trip builder and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Boat-shaped building, because when it was built these buildings should be elements of the activity of the company who would occupy them, in this case a shipping. It is one of considered skyscrapers of Hamburg in the time that was built, as well as the buildings that are the around Central magnificent. The constructor that sent you the job, asked it to integrate elements of the country of origin of the company who would occupy it, and how did not know much about Chile, it happened put grizzly bears and people in loincloths,... in the end. Today it is the more expensive building in Hamburg, and the Cervantes Institute is located on the first floor.

  • Much came around, know 101 countries, fortunately we hamburger this unique building and the show's like Gästen.Der most beautiful sight is from the East and also in the evening. Please forget not the stairwells. The top of the building from the East seen let a sleek prow of a fast ship, sailing vessel, which at that time took saltpeter from Chile.
