Chile House, Hamburg

4.4
#22 of 56 in Sightseeing in Hamburg
Architectural Building Tourist Spot
Brick Expressionism personified, Chile House was constructed using nearly 5 million bricks, making the structure so heavy that special footers had to be designed to support the foundation. Shaped like a ship's prow and rising impressively against the sky, the ten-story office building is a photographer's dream. Commissioned by shipping magnate Henry Sloman, who made his fortune trading saltpeter from Chile (hence the name), the building is famed for its facades, which meet at very sharp angles at the corner of two very busy streets. Despite its enormous size, the building's accentuated vertical elements and recessed upper stories give it a touch of lightness and timeless elegance. Be sure to walk through the various entryways; each one is differently embellished with figures designed to look like groups of people and animals. Put Chile House into our Hamburg trip builder and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Architectural nordduetsche of brick. Well worth the effort. Don't forget to relax one of the two entrances to gures to see how the building also looks inside.

  • The ChileHaus is in Hamburg as the House Pedrosa in Barcelona (or slice of Polenta in Turin): the building is unique for the contrast between front and side subtlety of Majesty. To see and appreciate the living oxymoron that is.

Where to stay in Hamburg

The most dynamic part of the city is the St. Pauli area, also known as Kiez. This is where tourists and locals brush shoulders among the many bars, shops, and sites. Jungfernsteig, or Neuer Wall, is an upmarket area with brand name shopping and luxury dining. Consider a stay in the bohemian quarters of Altona or the Sternschanze/Schanzenviertel. These areas burst with character and offer out-of-the-ordinary shopping and dining experiences at lower prices.
