Chile House, Hamburg
(4.4/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
Brick Expressionism personified, Chile House was constructed using nearly 5 million bricks, making the structure so heavy that special footers had to be designed to support the foundation. Shaped like a ship's prow and rising impressively against the sky, the ten-story office building is a photographer's dream. Commissioned by shipping magnate Henry Sloman, who made his fortune trading saltpeter from Chile (hence the name), the building is famed for its facades, which meet at very sharp angles at the corner of two very busy streets. Despite its enormous size, the building's accentuated vertical elements and recessed upper stories give it a touch of lightness and timeless elegance. Be sure to walk through the various entryways; each one is differently embellished with figures designed to look like groups of people and animals. Put Chile House into our Hamburg trip builder and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • An unusual 11-storey building in the South-Eastern part of Hamburg surprises its "okologoticheskim" style. If you get close, then traced a clear German mark in construction of thin brick.

  • It is a very original building that it costs nothing to approach when you are walking by the Altstadt. Required for a complete visit to Hamburg (is world heritage site)

  • Absolutely gorgeous! The shape, the color of the bricks, the details, everything is impressive here. It could just get better if it was possible to admire it from a certain distance. Well, this is pos...  more »
