Chile House, Hamburg
Categories: Architectural Buildings, Tourist Spots
Brick Expressionism personified, Chile House was constructed using nearly 5 million bricks, making the structure so heavy that special footers had to be designed to support the foundation. Shaped like a ship's prow and rising impressively against the sky, the ten-story office building is a photographer's dream. Commissioned by shipping magnate Henry Sloman, who made his fortune trading saltpeter from Chile (hence the name), the building is famed for its facades, which meet at very sharp angles at the corner of two very busy streets. Despite its enormous size, the building's accentuated vertical elements and recessed upper stories give it a touch of lightness and timeless elegance. Be sure to walk through the various entryways; each one is differently embellished with figures designed to look like groups of people and animals. Put Chile House into our Hamburg trip builder and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

Eine besondere Architektur, die erstaunen lässt. Auch den Sprinkenhof, der fast gegenüber liegt, ansehen. Am Sonntag ist es hier ziemlich ruhig und man hat genügend Zeit, alles genau zu betrachten.A special architecture, which can be surprising. See also the Sprinkenhof which is almost opposite. On Sunday, it's quite quiet and you have plenty of time to look at everything.show original
