Architectural Building
The largest marketplace in Germany, Freudenstadt's Marktpl. sits on a high plateau at the edge of the Black Forest. Bordered by arcaded houses, the marketplace was built in 1599 and designed by architect Heinrich Schickhardt. The Upper Square, the most vibrant and diverse part of the market, contains the town church and Schickhardtbau police housing. The Lower Square is adorned with fountains and a lifesize version of Nine Men's Morris, a traditional European board game. (You can borrow game pieces from the tourist office). All around the marketplace, you can explore shops, restaurants, and cafes with local produce. Don't miss the Black Forest cake, a specialty of the region.
