Schlossberg, Freiburg im Breisgau
(4.2/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
Just to the east of Freiberg's Old Town and perfect for hikes and recreation, Schlossberg is a small mountain area used by the French as a fortress from 1677 to 1744 and the site of many battles and disputes. To get to the top, you can either take a footpath opposite the Schwabentor or the new castle mountain railway funicular. Atop the mountain, you'll find the beginnings of various hiking trails, a 19th-century tower, remains of the old fortress, and the Schlossberg observation tower. Stop by the Greiffeneggschlössle beer garden for a break, and be sure to take in the impressive view of Freiberg. Plan your visit to Schlossberg and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Freiburg im Breisgau vacation route planner.

  • The Schlossberg is a high Hill about 450 m above the town of Fribourg, which therefore represents a perfect vantage point to admire the city from the top. The Hill of Schlossberg is reachable on foot (tiring) but also (as we did) with a small funicular ("Schlossbergbahn") by 25 seats, 3 ' ride, cost 5 € round trip. From the arrival station of the funicular is only 10 ' walk along a path wide and flat-called "Cannon" viewpoint, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city, with the majestic and austere Cathedral that stands out on all buildings. to do!!!

  • You can probably get a more enjoyable hike out of Schlossberg than most other Schwarzwald trails - lots of paths, occasional great views and starting right from Freiburg Altstadt.
  • It's nice to walk up the hill. You get a nice view over the city and you can enjoy a little nature. There are plenty of ways to get ip and down.
  • The climb up the hill in middle of city and view are very enjoyable for all age groups. The tower at the top is closed and there is no information on when or if it will reopen.
  • If you would like to see panoramic view of the city this is the best place in Freiburg. Near to city center.
  • Great place to go for a run or hiking... Enjoyed great view to the city and there are so many small trails/pathway to the top.
