Schlossberg, Freiburg im Breisgau

4.2
#2 of 7 in Parks in Freiburg im Breisgau
Just to the east of Freiberg's Old Town and perfect for hikes and recreation, Schlossberg is a small mountain area used by the French as a fortress from 1677 to 1744 and the site of many battles and disputes. To get to the top, you can either take a footpath opposite the Schwabentor or the new castle mountain railway funicular. Atop the mountain, you'll find the beginnings of various hiking trails, a 19th-century tower, remains of the old fortress, and the Schlossberg observation tower. Stop by the Greiffeneggschlössle beer garden for a break, and be sure to take in the impressive view of Freiberg. • ... totally confusing and not well signposted. We arrived with the cable car and then stood in front of the restaurant. Continue to get to the observation tower, was unfortunately not so simple. There are a variety of ways - official and less official on the mountain. Unfortunately, it was not very easy to find the right way, especially as the structural State to let often no inference. Overall, the visit of the Castle Hill was interesting and the view from the tower is terrific. Just the way has been there some no good at all, rather it somewhat problematic. This is caused by the winding forest roads and their condition. You have the right way, we have only found the "descent", it is somewhat easier.

  • When the tower is not currently blocked, is to run it always worth and enjoy the view.

  • Interesting architectural structure on hilltop. Hike to this and you are rewarded with nice 360 degrees views from the top. You just have to climb a few stairs. Worth visiting.  more »

  • Definitely worth a visit either by foot or the funicular railway. Good views from the top right across the Rhine and into France. Perhaps the best way to view the cathedral and burn off some calories.
  • Great place for a bit of hiking but paths should be better colour coded and the place lacks of public maps or information in English. We had been stopped by at least 10 walkers for advice and luckily we had a downloadable map on our mobile to help. Unfortunately the tower is closed until autumn. Some places seriously needs cleaning and tidying up as we have seen lots of discarded dirty shoes, clothes, needles and bottles just above the station where the views would have been excellent (but we were scared to walk across on that level and turned back to find another path). Lovely and clean places to rest on the other side and around the cross.
  • Fantastic views of Freiburg. A must do for any tourist.
  • A great piece of nature in the middle of the city. And it's possible to spend more or less time there, many nice spots to make a break and to look over the city. I walked up and on my way down I took the schlossbahn, which stops at a smaller park with a kiosk.
  • After climbing up we were rather disappointed to find the tower closed and encased in a large fence. Some of the views on the way up were nice and the paths were well maintained but the summit is full of trees and I personally think it isn't worthwhile, the view is better from some of the other points on the hill.
