#5 of 51 in Things to do in Freiburg im Breisgau
Mountain Nature / Park
Just to the east of Freiberg's Old Town and perfect for hikes and recreation, Schlossberg is a small mountain area used by the French as a fortress from 1677 to 1744 and the site of many battles and disputes. To get to the top, you can either take a footpath opposite the Schwabentor or the new castle mountain railway funicular. Atop the mountain, you'll find the beginnings of various hiking trails, a 19th-century tower, remains of the old fortress, and the Schlossberg observation tower. Stop by the Greiffeneggschlössle beer garden for a break, and be sure to take in the impressive view of Freiberg. • We took the Schlossberg-Bahn funicular (one-way) ride because we wished to enjoy the view from the adjoining Rosskopf peak. Fantastic views of the region guaranteed. The trails are easy walk, even for...  more »
  • Taking advantage of that one morning I woke up me a little earlier than usual, fit me the sneakers and followed the advice of a friend who recommended me to go running by the Schlossberg. I was relatively close to my hotel, so take a couple of minutes to get and I only had to cross a bridge on the road to gain access. I remember the feeling of indecision during the first kilometres. Look where you look at, everything was full of paths that is afoot in the forest. This for a person so addicted to running and hiking like me, is like a drug. I spent more than one hour and a half to explore all the paths that I could until by chance I got to an observation tower that is at the top of the mountain. From the top I enjoyed during a time views of the city and the stunning surroundings, that if... wouldn't know as return if requested me!

  • A great piece of nature in the middle of the city. And it's possible to spend more or less time there, many nice spots to make a break and to look over the city. I walked up and on my way down I took the schlossbahn, which stops at a smaller park with a kiosk.
  • It's nice to walk up the hill. You get a nice view over the city and you can enjoy a little nature. There are plenty of ways to get ip and down.
  • The climb up the hill in middle of city and view are very enjoyable for all age groups. The tower at the top is closed and there is no information on when or if it will reopen.
  • Great place to go for a run or hiking... Enjoyed great view to the city and there are so many small trails/pathway to the top.
  • If you would like to see panoramic view of the city this is the best place in Freiburg. Near to city center.
