Goethe House, Frankfurt

4.0
Safely stored away when the Allies bombed Frankfurt during World War II, the original furnishings from writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's family were later brought out to decorate Goethe House, the author's birthplace. The house was built in wooden-fronted medieval style in 1600. In 1755, Goethe's father completely remodeled it. The home was destroyed during the war but was rebuilt and opened in 1952. A magnificent staircase connects the floors: The top floor features an exhibit on the home's history and its residents; next, a floor with the room where Goethe likely was born, as well as his sister's bedroom; below that, a music room; and finally the entrance hall and kitchen. Consider using the audio guide as you tour the building. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Frankfurt trip simple and quick.

  • The hotel is very close to the Goethe-Institut. It is close to the Römer square, so please consider when you squeeze the schedule. The house also has a wall outside and is inconvenient to take pictures.

  • The biggest drawback of this house is its popularity with tour groups-it is unfortunately quite crowded in the Goethe House. Otherwise, however, it is worth a visit-you walk through the old family home and build up the picture through history from the puzzle pieces of the rooms. Some more info texts would be helpful. As a small benefit there is still a collection of paintings from the Goethe family to look at. Clearly a recommendation!

  • The Goethe House faces a narrow road off the main street, so I think it is difficult to understand. The receptionist pays 7 euros for the entrance fee and the person who has luggage is deposited in the locker and is visited. There is a Japanese brochure, but it was out of stock when I visited. The House of Goethe was burnt down by the bombing in the Second World War, and the furniture etc. were kept in another place, and the house was restored, and the furniture etc. are real. There is a room of the poet who wrote "Faust" etc. in the room of Goethe birth and fourth floor in the third floor in the fourth floor building. The House of Goethe which was restored almost faithfully is an atmosphere which seems to feel the breathing of the Goethe family even though it was restored.

  • It’s well preserved but the employees inside were not so kind. First of all, credit card wasn’t available, meanwhile cash only. And there was a ma’am sitting at the corner. When visitors went through, she would talk to them in serious manner to remind them not touching anything. In my opinion, normal visitors know the rules, to remind everyone is good but it’s better to talk in much better attitude. Last but not least, a big part was under repair. It was a little pity. But generally speaking, the Goethe Haus was good for a look because all the old things were under good maintenance.
  • Nice presentation of an interesting historical figure. Also the arts gallery is a good source of context for the period and how great minds in that time worked together a draft influenced the world they lived in.
  • The entrance fee is 7€ per adult and 3€ per student. Great gift shop with good prices! Plenty of antique furniture to see and the history (life) of Goethe! Lack of information, not the kindest "guides" you can meet and not accessible enough on what you see and how it used to operate! Easy to spot, difficult parking space (not if you pay of course)! Nice effort but it can be improved!
  • Nice museum. Not my scene but still interesting as he is an important figure in Germany.
  • Enterance ticket is sold EUR7 just as cash. Everyting inside is impressive and furniture is amazing also. Great to visit here and being able to feel Goethe.
