Eiserner Steg, Frankfurt

4.4
Built in 1867 to support horse and carriage traffic over the River Main to the train station, Eiserner Steg offers stunning views of Frankfurt's skyline and most historic buildings. Cars are not allowed on the bridge, making it an ideal place for a romantic walk or a pensive stroll. Along the railings and bridge structure, you'll find hundreds of padlocks placed here by couples as a symbol of their unending love. The bridge connects the city's historic quarter with the Sachsenhausen district, where plentiful museums and pubs serve typical German cider. • This bridge is completely overrated-countless tourists jostle on it and you can look at the city-but you can also use any other bridge or even one of the buildings on the other side of the shore much more relaxed and at the same time see the Iron Steg itself. Verdict: Really not worth it.

  • I crossed the Iron Bridge to reach the area of Sachsenhausen from the city center. The bridge itself is nothing remarkable, and people started copying what happened first in Rome, and you can see a lo...  more »
  • It was a small bridge, but a message was written to pray for the love fulfillment that countless padlocks were hanging on the bridge. The view from near the center of the bridge is very good.

  • This bridge is definitely unique with all its padlocks, which form an interesting view running down the whole length of the bridge - and somehow go well with the bridge's heavy iron look! Other than that, the views are quite nice in both directions, making it a popular photo spot, with the various buildings of Frankfurt in the background, and the boats on the water below. The bridge can be quite crowded at peak tourist times, with lots of people trying to get a good photo. But it is apparently emptier and the view is pretty in the early morning hours. You can see the other bridges crossing the Main river in the distance as well.
  • It was an okay destination. But the sidewalks of the lake are great. We enjoyed sitting there for a long time in the evening with the view of the buildings lit. There are few good river cruises also at reasonable prices, if you want to see the view further for half an hour or so.
  • The iron bridge in Frankfurt is quite a famous place for lovers i guess. Plenty of padlocks with their names engraved and the keys possibly thrown to the Maine River. Has great views and ideal for some photos in the city. Can get a good glimpse of the city's growing skyline.
  • This bridge has stunning views over Frankfurt. It is great in the morning, when there are few tourists or during the sunset. Supposedly, it is also a place for lovers to 'iron' their resolve to be together, by putting a lock and throwing the key into the river. Not sure what happens, when there's too many locks though ;)
  • This place was just perfect, the staff are super nice and friendly, the view is just breath taking any time of the day, plus everything taste amazing with good price. We highly recommend it to visit them.
