Church Tourist Spot
The Catholic Erfurt Cathedral is a 1200-year-old church located on Cathedral Hill of Erfurt, in Thuringia, Germany. It is of an International Gothic style, and is also known as St Mary's Cathedral, and is located, uniquely, on a hillside. It is the episcopal seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erfurt.HistoryThe site of the present Cathedral has been the location of many other christian buildings, for example a Romanesque basilica and a church hall. Martin Luther was ordained in the cathedral in 1507.ArchitectureThe architecture of the Erfurt Cathedral is mainly Gothic and stems from around the 14th and 15th centuries. There are many things of note as far as the architecture is concerned, not least the stained glass windows and furnishings of the interior of the cathedral. The central spire of the three towers that sit aloft the cathedral harbours the Maria Gloriosa which, at the time of its casting by Geert van Wou in 1497, was the world's largest free-swinging bell. It is the largest existing medieval bell in the world. It is known to have purity and beauty of tone.Relics and treasuresThe cathedral houses many rare and rich furnishings and sculptures, including the tomb of the bigamous Count von Gleichen, accompanied by both of his wives, a stucco altar, a bronze candelebra of Romanesque antiquity called Wolfram, the oldest free standing cast work in Germany, and, out on the porch, several statues of the Wise and Foolish Virgins.

  • Only the location of the Cathedral, perched above the Cathedral square with views of the city, is impressive. But also the House of the God is absolutely worth a visit and is well worth a visit.

  • Very beautiful Cathedral. On the large square in front of the Cathedral, there's a market, throughout the week and also festivals.

  • Erfurt is an unexpectedly interesting and beautiful city. Its medieval streets, the island in the middle of the arms of the River, the bridge of the craftsmen... Everything is a very pleasant surprise. At the top, the Cathedral (Dom), impressive, along with another powerful mole: the Catholic Church of St. Severin. Two giants stuck alongside each other. I've never seen something like this!

  • The best view over the city. Simple but beautiful decoration... baptismal font specially.
  • where you can get the best view of erfurt from above
  • Very impressive cathedral on gothic style. A historic place where Martin Luter have served. It is the symbol of the city and the oldest historic monument in the whole region. MUST BE SEEN place
  • Amazing cathedral overlooking the city. Stunning architecture and design, beautiful stained glass windows and history. Highly recommend to anyone who appreciates history.
  • From the outside, there seems something off, as if the cathedrale is unfinished. But it's impressive anyhow, esspecially when you visit the inside. Great glass in lead windows and a lot to see beside these windows.
