Domplatz, Erfurt
(4.6/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
Domplatz, one of the largest markets in Germany, was once the main market square and Courthouse Square--so a trip here allows you to shop where people have been trading since the 12th century. Enjoy the view of Cathedral Hill and the fortress, or stop and see the Minerva Fountain or Erthal obelisk. Various festivals are held here throughout the year, including one of the largest and best-known Christmas markets in Germany. Several restaurants are sprinkled throughout the area. If you don't speak German well, consider skipping this site; few people here speak English. Put Domplatz and other Erfurt attractions into our Erfurt travel itinerary planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • It has the best views of the Christmas market from the steps of the Cathedral! We've taken the climb over the left-hand stairs and completed a stroll through the medieval Christmas market which takes place for the first time this year, doing the same. The whole city is a Christmas market! A walk is really worth.

  • A Domplatz is the main square of the capital of Thuringia. It owes its name to the majestic Gothic Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who from the top of a staircase that starts from the square itself, it dominates the same with its beautiful gothic line and borders one side. On the square facing also bars restaurants and shops. Because of its centrality and the amplitude, the square is suitable for corporate events and concerts, as well as the city market. In fact the Domplatz plays a central role in the occasion of the Kramerbrucke Festival, a summer festival which takes its name from the bridge of Kramerbrucke and which takes place every year on the third weekend of June in the city of Erfurt, involving the whole of the Centre of the beautiful city. They set up stalls, rides and is also positioned a stage for shows and concerts of German artists.

  • It is grade, is the Christmas market. The square of the Cathedral in Erfurt is a big market with around 3.5 hectares, with adjacent buildings intact or restored. Domplatz was once the market square and the main court square. In the square is the source of Minerva (1784) and in 1777 was erected in honor to the elector of Mainz Erthal the Obelisk.

  • Impressive view of Mariendom and Severikirche, as well as the old town of Erfurt.
  • Pretty nice place. Near Tram stop you can find nice and cheap Thuringer bratwurst for 1,5€. At the corner - supermarket to buy some beers. At the hill at Citadel you can lay down to the grass: drink beer and eat the Bratwurst.
  • The main place in Erfurt where you will find many events and fair during the year, including Christmas market and other seasonal markers and fairs!
  • Definitely highlight of Erfurt, must see.
  • Very big square indeed! It's huge!
