St. Lambertus Church, Dusseldorf
Categories: Architectural Buildings, Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
The medieval St. Lambertus Church, likely the oldest building in Dusseldorf, is one of the historic quarter's best-known landmarks and houses the bones of St. Apollinaris, the city's patron saint. The structure's the famous leaning roof was said to have been twisted by the Devil in a fit of rage. When the spire was destroyed by fire in 1815, the fresh wood used for the hurried reconstruction was so moist that it buckled as it dried. Inside the minor basilica, you can see the tomb of Duke Wilhelm V of Jülich-Kleve-Berg, Dusseldorf's most important piece of Renaissance sculpture. Pick up a guide at the entrance to the church. After your visit, stroll over to the Rhine Promenade for a walk and a cup of coffee.
