Standseilbahn, Dresden

4.3
#4 of 6 in Scenic Drive in Germany
Scenic Drive Outdoor Activity
Built to link the residential area of Weisser Hirsch with the lower-lying Loschwitz district in 1895, Standseilbahn is now a historical monument. Originally steam-powered, the line was converted to run on electricity in 1910. Take the brief ride up the hill, winding through beautiful natural surroundings to peer across the Elbe valley. Though the lower station was destroyed during World War II, the carriages had been stored in the tunnels, keeping them intact. Even if you don't choose to take a ride, the well-preserved cars are interesting to see. Using our custom trip planner, Dresden attractions like Standseilbahn can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

Where to stay in Dresden

The Old City, or Altstadt district, is the city's historical center. You'll find a wide selection of accommodations around the major tourist sites. For an area that stays active both day and night, consider lodging in Aussere Neustadt, located northeast of the Old City. The Hellerau District has an urban and hip vibe, thanks to the fashionable young locals who populate the area. Boutique hotels contribute to the area's chic feel.
