Old Market Square (Altmarkt), Dresden

(4/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
Though obliterated by Allied bombing raids during World War II, Old Market Square (Altmarkt) represents an important piece of Dresden's recent history. The interesting combination of more German-style buildings and concrete Stalinist architecture was introduced to East Germany after the war. The massive Palace of Culture is a classic example of interesting Communist building techniques and style. Note the surrounding buildings' vaulted arcade storefronts and cream-tinted color scheme as you wander across one of the city's main historical gathering places. Keep an eye out for bullet holes still marring parts of the nearby town hall, a stark reminder of the destruction that once wreaked havoc upon Dresden. Using our online itinerary creator, Dresden attractions like Old Market Square (Altmarkt) can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • It is what it is...a square. If you are walking about the city you are bound to wander onto it even if you are not trying to find it. As one learns of the recent and very dramatic history of Dresnden,...  more »
  • My friends and I spent the day at the annual Christmas fair. Here immersed in the atmosphere of celebration and almost magic. Multicolored Glow light bulbs everywhere, numerous trailers with souvenirs and food are decorated very vividly and truly fabulous. Selection of street food is sizzling hot! Meat lovers advise finding fragrant wild boar cutlets loaf (serves two) and a cow on a skewer (meat tender and delicious). A huge number of desserts and drinks. Hungry don't exactly go))). Many souvenirs, dazzled. Evenings can be spent, riding the Ferris wheel overlooking the radiating surface, very romantic and beautiful. I think that this area is beautiful at any time of year and you will spend part of the day here, visiting the beautiful city of Dresden. But on Christmas day the special atmosphere here.

  • This is a big square that is totally underwhelming throughout the year, that is until the Christmas market takes place here.
