Old Market Square (Altmarkt), Dresden

Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4/5 based on 280 reviews on the web
Though obliterated by Allied bombing raids during World War II, Old Market Square (Altmarkt) represents an important piece of Dresden's recent history. The interesting combination of more German-style buildings and concrete Stalinist architecture was introduced to East Germany after the war. The massive Palace of Culture is a classic example of interesting Communist building techniques and style. Note the surrounding buildings' vaulted arcade storefronts and cream-tinted color scheme as you wander across one of the city's main historical gathering places. Keep an eye out for bullet holes still marring parts of the nearby town hall, a stark reminder of the destruction that once wreaked havoc upon Dresden. • Everyone's here. From historic buildings over coffee drink and delicious food until the shopping where no wish remains open. Take enough time, there is to much experience here and see.

  • Is a large square, with new buildings and some restored. I couldn't find anything more but as it is in the path of the Kreuzkirche you can stop to take pictures. For those who like shopping has a huge, including supermarket, with one of the entries in the square

  • Imagine that this is just about all rebuilt. Can not imagine the pain and hardship people went through during the bombing.
