Museum of Military History, Dresden

#6 of 36 in Museums in Dresden
A visit to Museum of Military History in Dresden offers an insightful look into the human aspects of war, as well as the evolution of German military technology. The original building, which served as an armory, was built in 1873 and was a Nazi museum, a Soviet museum, and an East German museum before being closed in 1989. It reopened in 2011 with the striking metallic addition on the facade, which is meant to make visitors reconsider the way they think about war. Pass through the exhibit spaces divided into nine categories, such as politics, human aggression, and art in war. At the top level, you can walk along the modern structure, which is open to the elements and offers views of Dresden. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Dresden holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Museum of Military History and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Too bad anyone who knows this museum from earlier will be bitterly disappointed now, demilitarized like the Bundeswehr, probably on the direct command of the Defense Minister. The outdoor area still raises hope but the exhibition inside is disappointing, Unfortunately, the best exhibits are withheld from the tech-interested visitor.

  • When the time comes when it is no longer possible to smuggle all visitors through the kennel and the castle, one should better promote this magnificent, fabulously orderly and richly stocked museum. If you take the tram there, you need the city map to find it at all. The richer he/she will find himself/herself rewarded. Gherardino

  • The outdoor exhibition includes the military technique of the GDR and the Bundeswehr. Inside a palette of uniforms from the beginnings through Prussia, both world wars to the present. There is also an exhibition dedicated to foreign missions such as Kosovo and Afghanistan under the nato banner. It may be unbelieved, but there are "military animals" like an elephant, lion, dogs, camel or mule.

  • If you are most interested in vehicles and big equipment, the best stuff for me were the vehicles parked outside of the building which you can see without entering the museum. The museum space was nice and had interesting exhibitions with lot of smaller stuff ... Guns, uniforms, etc. The part focusing on development after 1945 had a nice comparison between East and West German armies.
  • Building is massive and exhibits are spaced out so worth getting a tour with one of the excellent guides. Has the usual mix of standard exhibits and arty quirkiness of German museums. Starting at the sticky out wedge and working your way down is probably the best way to see everything. Allow at least 2 to 3 hours.
  • One of the best museums I've been to, most of the stuff is translated to English, a lot of interactive panels which I didn't notice at the start. It's very big and you'll need a lot of time to look through all the expositions.
  • Have been there once or twice and it's a wonderful place to learn something about history. There's a lot to look at and it's really interesting!
  • One of the best military history museums in Germany. Interesting section on the use of drugs by armies during warfare. Very neat artifacts including an early submarine and an intact V2 rocket. Well worth the visit. 90% of exhibits have very good English translations. Section on the bombing of Dresden was very small.
