Dresden Castle or Royal Palace is one of the oldest buildings in Dresden, Germany. For almost 400 years, it was the residence of the electors and kings of Saxony of the Albertine line of the House of Wettin. It is known for the different architectural styles employed, from Baroque to Neo-renaissance.Today, the residential castle is a museum complex that contains the Historic and New Green Vault, the Numismatic Cabinet, the Collection of Prints, Drawings and Photographs and the Dresden Armory with the Turkish Chamber. It also houses an art library and the management of the Dresden State Art Collections.HistoryThe original castle was a Romanesque keep, built around 1200. The Hausmannsturm was built at the beginning of the 15th century. From 1468 until 1480, the keep was extended by the master builder, Arnold von Westfalen, becoming an enclosed four-wing construction. In the middle of the 16th century, an addition was added in the Renaissance style. After a major fire in 1701, Augustus II the Strong rebuilt much of the castle in the Baroque style. The collection rooms were created at this time in the western wing. The Silver Room, Heraldic Room and the Pretiosensaal were built from 1723–1726 and the Kaminzimmer, Juwelenzimmer (Jewel Room), Ivory Room and Bronze Room were built from 1727–1729.

  • If you love chocolate, this is the place to visit. The store offers chocolate from around the world, as well as a cafe for a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Try the chocolate ice cream on a stick covered in chocolate powder, or the vanilla ice cream with white chocolate for a real chocolate kick to keep you going while touring Dresden. The vegan chocolate ice cream is also very tasty. The prices are fair and the variety of products is amazing, like chocolate beer, rum, sardines, and other fun chocolate things to try.
  • Very high quality Chocolates in Dresden
  • Why is 20 stars not an option?!!!! Oh my. Where to begin when talking about this little piece of heaven on earth? How is it possible to capture how unbelievably delicious Camondas truly is? How can I get across that their chocolate creations can never be replicated? That their "Dresden Cake" potentially beat out their amazingly fantastic chocolate cake and this is coming from a girl who named her marketing company Will Work For Chocolate!! Ok, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's level set. Camondas wasn't even on our list. We were staying in Prague and took a day trip to Dresden, Germany. Lots of things were on our itinerary. Cathedrals, museums, and we even had restaurants chosen. But none of our research told us that Camondas should be right up there on our list, right behind the Green Vault. Now, full disclosure, we LOVE chocolate. Pasties, cakes, patisseries, gelato, it doesn't matter where and the time isn't important either. We're always on the lookout for a great local find. So when we walked by the unassuming storefront we, at first, didn't notice it. But then we did. I ordered an iced chocolate drink. If you're familiar with Serendipity's Frozen Hot Chocolate, that pretty much nails it in the description department. It's served in a frosty mug with frozen chocolate swirled on the inside (that, after drinking it, I was determined to chisel off one tiny bit at a time. But that was fine. I'm no quitter). Heaven! After our drink we hit more museums (in Dresden it's kinda like Chicago where they have a lot of museums clustered together so it's perfect for a day trip to hop in and out), but found that all we could talk about was how dang good Camondas was! After a very disappointing late lunch (that for the love of Mike I wish I remembered to save you from this not-the-best restaurant. The inside was cluttered and looked like an antique mall, which I didn't mind at all but it's the only way I can think of describing it) it was time for one more cathedral before we had to cut back through the mini-mall that was between the old town and the train station. But we had to jump into Camondas right? Of course. Our behavior in that store... I think the best way to describe it is to think of it like a heist. We were frantic because time was cut short and we had about 3 people helping us. 1 in the bakery cutting up those two cakes I wrote about in the beginning of my post, 1 in chocolate bars (who grabbed a box and was randomly calling out flavors – "sea salt caramel?" YES "dark chocolate mixed with white chocolate combined with cookies and cream?" YES!!), and 1 in the gift boxes, chocolate powders, and other confectionary delights section. Now if you're thinking, "wow, that must have cost a lot!!" You're right. It did. But you're in a chocolate shop in Dresden, Germany. Not the place nor the time to skimp. If I could only recommend 2 things I would recommend the iced chocolate drink and the Dresden cake. That cake. We still talk about it and need to do the due diligence of trying to track that bad boy down and maybe even see if there's a copycat recipe we could find. This cake will make you drool like Homer Simpson, I kid you not. So go! Camondas will not disappoint and it's rare that you can go into a store and you literally cannot go wrong. And Camondas, if you're looking for an ad agency in the States, I'm your girl.
