Zeche Zollern II/IV, Westfalian Museum of Industry, Dortmund

4.6
#1 of 10 in Museums in Dortmund
Specialty Museum Museum
Here's a fascinating tidbit for the day: This grand old building, now Zeche Zollern II/IV, Westfalian Museum of Industry, was once a coal mine. Natch, the museum focuses on the German coal-mining industry. Admire the impressive "mansion of labor," and study a variety of artifacts from the industry’s heyday. Stories from the 20th-century workers themselves immerse you in the conditions the men and women endured. Children will enjoy the coal-mine play area, but they're likely to get wet and dirty, so bring a change of clothes for them so you all can stop for food or drinks at the onsite restaurant. Our Dortmund vacation planner makes visiting Zeche Zollern II/IV, Westfalian Museum of Industry and other Dortmund attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • I was alone here a few years ago and wanted to share this great place now with my husband. The entrance fee for adults is €4. The car park is free of charge. On Sundays, there are two free guides. And there is much. The exhibition is great and gives an interesting insight into the lives of workers and their families. The wonderful Jugenstilarchitektur is very pleasing. Please do not forget the camera! The exhibition is also suitable for children. As we have seen, you can get married on the grounds. There are clean toilets spread on the whole site. Who wants to eat something, it can in the adjoining restaurant, that offers very good food. Well even the gift shop at the exit we liked - he has a great selection. I was a bit puzzled though about how little was going on here.

  • To the first with a coal mine tour. Beautiful hotel with impressive buildings, especially the Machinenraum is a highlight...

  • Relatively spontaneous my boyfriend and I went on Sunday to Dortmund to experience a bit of culture and history. Lured has us proximity to our location and the cheap entry. What can I do wrong at €4? The number of visitors on Sunday was really straightforward so that we could look at the Museum, the exhibition and the entire site in peace and quiet. The exhibition is really very vivid and exciting design. Many original exhibits and old photos have us closer the life in and around the mine. Determined also interesting because it is as I said very clearly was designed for somewhat younger audience. The terrain itself is worth a visit. Was very spontaneous as I said we had not really prepared ourselves or informed, we were positively surprised, and next time I'd probably even when I visit.
