  • The Hesssiche Museum is one of the last universal museums in Germany and goes back to a foundation of Grand Duke Ludwig I of Hesse dating back to 1820. It houses extensive and sometimes high-profile collections modern and old art, archaeology, paleontology, zoology, mineralogy and the world-famous fossil finds from the Messel pit. That sounds like a big mess is but — especially after the new presentation in the context of the extensive repair work - an exciting and varied insight into various research and collection areas. I came actually among other things because of the extensive Beuys Blocks and amazed had to determine which are excellent works of German and international post-war art (judge, Immendorff, Baselitz, Penck, Warhol), but also of German Expressionism (Kirchner, Heckel, Liebermann), can be found here. Great, the "forest of sculptures" is a collection of approximately 40 outstanding sculptural works of modernism (Brancusi, Giacometti, Ernst, Bill, etc.), which was dedicated to the Museum in 2004 by the Geneva art collector Simon Spierer. A highlight of the Museum is the Antiquities Department for me and others with Roman finds from the region such as E.g. the Oceanus mosaic of the Roman baths in Bad Vilbel. Beautifully matching presented in the neo-classical building of the Museum in an atrium with a glass skylight, it shows how gorgeous the Romans also so far in the barbaric Germanic province have built and lived. The palaeontology Department with copies of the oldest fossils of our human ancestors from Africa, such as the famous Lucy and reconstructions of the heads of the skulls was exciting for me. The Museum is also suitable for families with children. The beautifully presented Zoological Department and the large skeletons of a Mastodon is recommended for this. Here, the Hessian State Museum looks like a downsized version of the Senckenbergmuseums in Frankfurt, with significantly more modern exhibition and museum didactics. Very good last, I must mention yet the special exhibition with sculptures by Tony Cragg, a visit alone would have been worth. We had only 2 hours time, when the Museum closes at 17: 00 on Sunday, but I'll come back soon.

  • Lovers of art and natural history will be delighted by the Hessisches Landesmuseum and its impressive collection of art and artifacts spanning the ages. I particularly enjoyed the rich collection of Jugendstil / Art Nouvaeu works (some of which were created in Darmstadt during the period). Also, the architecture of the museum itself is awesome. I suggest allowing at least the greater part of a day to experience all this beautiful museum has to offer.
  • Awesome exhibits. Very classy and well done.
  • There is so much to see in here. Totally worth spending a whole day. Excellent place if you interested in Natural History.
  • Very nice collection.
