St. Ursula, Cologne

4.2
#9 of 17 in Historic Sites in Cologne
The home of St. Ursula's legend, the site where St. Ursula is built is said to be the burial spot for the 11,000 virgins in Princess Ursula's entourage who were killed by attacking Huns. The only corroborating evidence for this event is a manuscript that rests in the basilica. The book, along with the alleged relics of the 11,000 virgins and St. Ursula, are housed in the main cathedral. The walls of the Golden Chamber are decorated with relics and bones encased in gold, all of which create shapes and form Latin letters. These bones are thought to belong to the sacred virgins that died along with Ursula. Use our Cologne road trip planning website to add St. Ursula and other attractions to your Cologne vacation plans.

  • Located very close to the Cathedral, built on the ruins of a Roman Cemetery, and is one of the twelve Romanesque churches of Cologne. It has an impressive reliquary, its entrance is free and during our visit we are not just people visiting her. It gave us a feeling of great peace of mind.

  • This place is worth a visit. It is not the most ornate church but is beautiful in it's own right. It is dedicated to St. Ursula who has a real interesting story.  more »
  • Beautiful old building is not known as well as the Cathedral. But it's worth a visit. The Interior is simply awesome. And building has kept the medieval look.
