St. Ursula, Cologne

Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.4/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web
The home of St. Ursula's legend, the site where St. Ursula is built is said to be the burial spot for the 11,000 virgins in Princess Ursula's entourage who were killed by attacking Huns. The only corroborating evidence for this event is a manuscript that rests in the basilica. The book, along with the alleged relics of the 11,000 virgins and St. Ursula, are housed in the main cathedral. The walls of the Golden Chamber are decorated with relics and bones encased in gold, all of which create shapes and form Latin letters. These bones are thought to belong to the sacred virgins that died along with Ursula. • We went here twice to see the church. Even though we were there during opening hours, no one was there. Bummer, as I really wanted to see this church.
  • The Basilica of St. Ursula has a very special meaning for the city of Cologne. It belongs not only to the famous twelve Romanesque churches of the city, but is fruit of the legend of Saint Ursula, recorded symbolically in the Cologne city coat of arms. After the second world war, the Church was again to the ruin, but already with the reconstruction began in 1949. The renovation constant from 1999 to 2005 made accessible again also the Äbstissinnenchor and the Marie ship. There was also the "Golden Chamber". You 2 Euro entrance fee, but worth a visit.
