St. Maria im Kapitol, Cologne

4.7
#8 of 18 in Historic Sites in Cologne
Architectural Building Religious Site
The 11th-century St. Maria im Kapitol is the largest of Cologne's Romanesque churches. Although it suffered damage in World War II, some of its centuries-old artworks survived. Don't miss the intricately designed wooden doors from the 11th century, a plague crucifix from the 14th century, or the "Virgin on a Throne" from the 13th century. The crypt displays foundations of a Roman temple from the first (yes, FIRST!) century and of a previous church from 690 AD. • The coolest Church of Cologne. Magnificent apse, Colonnade, Interior, crypt. For me the number one in Cologne

  • It is a Romanesque church heavily damaged during the war and then rebuilt and definitely worth a visit. I haven't been able to get inside but I enjoyed the cloister collected and full of flowers and the corner of peace and tranquillity just behind the Church, accessed by entering under an arch. Ideal for a break from sightseeing.

  • All the world talks of the Cologne Cathedral, but this is for me the most beautiful church in Cologne. You can watch them quietly, is not bothered by crowds. You can sit there for long, go in and think about God and the world. Outside is a small cloister, some treasures can be seen in the Interior. Under anderm a Gothic fork cross, one of three in Cologne. Worth seeing are also the two Virgin Mary statues and the former portal (within the Church). You should take some time to visit this church!

  • Beautiful
  • Fantastic Romanesque church! Inside the luxurious church doors-masterpiece of wood rìz′b'ârstva 11 (!) and tusks of prehistoric animals. Modern restorers added new details to the entrance-find them!) In the church yard integrated hostel-you can see the Church Gallery 2nd floor. Must-visit place in Cologne!

Along the semicircle are hotel chains and boutique accommodations that offes ready access to the city center on foot or via a short metro ride. For access to nightlife, consider the Südstadt area known for its rock bars, cocktails, and theaters. The luxury accommodations in the elegant Friesenviertel area often attracts local celebrities.
