St. Maria im Kapitol, Cologne

4.7
#8 of 17 in Historic Sites in Cologne
The 11th-century St. Maria im Kapitol is the largest of Cologne's Romanesque churches. Although it suffered damage in World War II, some of its centuries-old artworks survived. Don't miss the intricately designed wooden doors from the 11th century, a plague crucifix from the 14th century, or the "Virgin on a Throne" from the 13th century. The crypt displays foundations of a Roman temple from the first (yes, FIRST!) century and of a previous church from 690 AD. It is a Romanesque church heavily damaged during the war and then rebuilt and definitely worth a visit. I haven't been able to get inside but I enjoyed the cloister collected and full of flowers and the corner of peace and tranquillity just behind the Church, accessed by entering under an arch. Ideal for a break from sightseeing.

  • Beautiful
  • Fantastic Romanesque church! Inside the luxurious church doors-masterpiece of wood rìz′b'ârstva 11 (!) and tusks of prehistoric animals. Modern restorers added new details to the entrance-find them!) In the church yard integrated hostel-you can see the Church Gallery 2nd floor. Must-visit place in Cologne!
