Roman-German Museum (Romisch-Germanisches Museum), Cologne

4.1
#3 of 25 in Museums in Cologne
Don't miss the highlight of Roman-German Museum (Romisch-Germanisches Museum): an 1,800-year old mosaic of the god Dionysus. The artwork, crafted from millions of ceramic tiles, is--amazingly--completely intact. Throughout the museum's three floors, you'll see hundreds of artifacts from the Roman colonization of the Rhine Valley. Various dioramas offer details about daily life and religion in Roman Germania. The exhibits are laid out to resemble the inner courtyard of a Roman villa. As you walk around, you'll see that the museum was built around the discovery of the mosaic. Be sure to pay a visit to the restored stretch of ancient road just outside the building. • A good sized museum dedicated to Roman exhibits and ruins left in the Cologne region after the Roman left. It's quite remarkable how much of it there was and how much has still lasted. The museum is easy to find as it is a stone throw's away from Cologne Cathedral. The museum has a cloak room, toilet facilities, gift shop, but doesn't have a cafe if you want something to drink. If you are in town and have some time and are interested in Roman artefacts than definitely try to visit it.
  • The centrepiece of this museum is a very nice and well preserved roman mosaic. The museum has a nice collection of roman artefacts, ranging from tombstones through glassware and daily-use objects to jewellery. However, the exhibition would need a revamp, since most inscriptions are written in German only and they are not written in a particularly captivating way, with relatively little background information. In our experience, hour and a half was enough for the visit.
  • A very nice museum featuring many architects from the Roman Empire! Highly recommend if you ever come to Cologne.
  • It is a very interesting place. Yes lots of vases and various cutleries used back in the day but you will see other interesting pieces. It makes more sense with a tour to fully enjoy this museum unless you want to be bored.
