Schloss Augustusburg, Bruhl

4.4
#14 of 107 in Historic Sites in North Rhine-Westphalia
Architectural Building Historic Site
Built on the ruins of a medieval moated castle, Schloss Augustusburg was commissioned by Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, Clemens August of Bavaria, in the early 18th century. With its interplay of ornate architecture, sculptures, and painting, it is a masterpiece of German Rococo. Enjoy a tour of the opulent palace to see the imposing staircase and charming frescoes and decoration. Though tours are mostly offered in German, an English audio guide can be purchased. Later, relax in the palace gardens, which are shared with Falkenlust Palace and were named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984 collectively with the two palaces. • It's a bit unfair to really compare, I know, but Palaces of wealthy muckety-mucks are difficult to not stack rank in the mind’s eye. And while it does not reach the grandeur of Versailles or intimate ...  more »
  • Large historical space, a large driveway to get to the Castle, a large seam Park a beautiful garden or wild passing geese make a stop in the basins. At the end of the Park at 2.5 km walk you will see the hunting lodge that can be seen from the outside by being on the highway.

  • Beautiful gardens(in french style). Visiting the castle is a must!!
  • Beautiful building but needs to be managed a bit better. Guided tours only and no pictures allowed inside (lame). They do have headsets with different languages for those who don't speak German.
  • Typically German baroque castle, very stately and strand in a large garden suiteable for walking
  • Beautiful castle with much historical significance. I highly recommend a tour of the interior for a look at the ornate stairway.
  • Very nice castles in the west of germany. Too bad the great castle (augustusburg) is only visitable with a guided tour and it's only an hour. And no picturetaking inside! But the fabulous art makes up for it, grand and majestic, a fine example of roccoco. The small castle is smaller but just als nice and worth the walk. The gardens are also great!
