Short-Way City
A rather long and narrow city spread along both sides of the Weser River, Bremen has more than a thousand years of history. Most of it has been spent as an independent city-state. The city stretches for about 10 km (6.2 mi) in an area of flat plains along its northwest-southeast axis. Yet in many places, it is only about 2 km (1.2 mi) wide. You'll find many tourist attractions within the city's historical town center, an oval area surrounded by the Weser River and the former moats of the medieval city walls. A plethora of things to do are all within walking distance of each other. As a cultural and industrial capital of northwestern Germany, Bremen features good rail connections to the central sections of the country and most other major cities. In the build up to your vacation in Bremen, plan trip itinerary minutiae using the visitor reviews, staff write-ups, and custom search fields on our Germany online driving holiday planner.

Where to stay in Bremen

For proximity to good transport connections and top attractions in Bremen, there's no better area to stay than between the main train station and the city center. Within this safe neighborhood, you can choose from a range of budget and mid-range options just a stone's throw from the historical Contrescarpe, on the shores of a small but pleasant lake. Look across the water to Altstadt (Old Town) to find a handful of boutique hotels, as well as more traditional accommodations housed in restored buildings.
