Marksburg Castle, Braubach

#Castle, #Landmark, #Must See
Marksburg Castle is the only medieval castle of the Middle Rhine that has never been destroyed. As a fortress, it protected medieval people rather than serving as a residence for royal families. Built around 1117 and entering the written record in 1231, it has a storied history. In the Napoleonic period, prisoners were kept here. It was damaged by American artillery in World War II. • One of the best preserved castles I have ever been to. Be aware that self tours are not allowed and English tours are only available a fee times a day. Solid German food at the cafe with an amazing view. Definitely worth a visit!!
  • This was a very beautiful castle tucked a wee walk up. It's about two miles from the train stop and mostly up hill but it's a gorgeous walk with benches along the way. They have a gift shop and restaurant onsite. Every hour they have guided tours that are very reasonably priced. I loved learning about the the history of the castle, ownership and about the times. The town was quaint but not too far from Frankfurt. You can see wineries and other castles along the route.
  • There is a trail to walk up. You should earn your castle visit. English guide was very good. Was able to answer a lot of questions. You can only get in the castle on tour.
  • Really cool castle, get a guided tour here otherwise there isn't a lot more to see other than the gift shop. The steps in the entrance are probably the coolest steps I've seen (trust me, it's a lot cooler than I've made it sound). There's lots to learn about what a castle lifestyle would have been like, with the castle in such good condition it gives of pretty strong museum vibes. Well worth a visit.
  • I consider this castle one of the most interesting to be visited insidely; it's full of history and curiosity of that ages. Our guide was really passionated and have been able to transmit us all the love for his job and for the castle. Visit will take around one hour, and it was available (at least when we visited) only in German language, but a written description is available also in other language and the guide was really kind in translating the highlights to us also in English. Tickets are sold nearby the castle entrance, where there is the possibility also to have a quick lunch. In the period we visited (beginning of March), guided tours were available each hour (10:00 - 11:00, etc), but maybe in Summer season there are more sessions.
