Tetraeder Bottrop, Bottrop

#2 of 11 in Things to do in Bottrop
Climb 60 m (197 ft) to the top of Tetraeder Bottrop for views of the Emscher Region and greater Ruhr Area. Standing atop the old Halde Beckstraße mine dump, the steel tetrahedron appears to hover above the ground, thanks to its innovative, weight-bearing structure. It can be seen for miles around and is a well-known landmark to Bottrop residents. Stop to rest on any of several platforms along the stairs before continuing to the top, which is lit at night in the green and yellow creations of Düsseldorf artist Jürgen LIT Fischer. • On a sunny autumn morning we went with our granddaughters (11 and 7 years old) on the ascent to the tetrahedron. The parking lot on Beckstraße was not full, and so a good free parking space for the car was quickly found. In serpentines, the path led us up to the dump, where the children tackled the ascent with fun and joy by stairs to the tetrahedron at dizzying heights with the best view. For us adults, the view through the metal lattice floors on stairs and platforms into the depths was a bit of a habit, but the ascent as such and the viewing platforms are very well secured. With clear visibility, the view above - as on the dump itself - was gigantic! We have enjoyed this excursion with great views and great ascent and descent to and from the halde on comfortable paths, especially in autumnal sunshine and autumnally colorful foliage on trees and on paths and pleasant temperatures and can here make a recommendation - especially for a pleasant hike with children - pronounce!

  • As a piece of art I don't like it, but I have never been one for modern art, as a viewing platform its very good, affording great views of the area. Bit of a hike to the top but not too strenuous.  more »
  • Here you get stunning views over the north part of the Ruhrgebiet on an architectural highlight in that region. You must not have health problems to climb all the stairs which lead you into heaven.  more »

  • Amazing place to see city surroundings from higher ground for a little hiking uphill. The Tetraeder itself is really well built and thrills a bit when you reach the top.
  • Nice place but I got stung by a bee. Many bees.
  • Favorite Industriekultur place. Great view, great architecture. Be aware, elderly this can take about 30-45 min to reach by foot.
  • A nice place to hangout and get out of the city comforts. Easily reachable via public transport and then a 500m walk to the hill bottom. You can take the stairs or the zig zag pay towards the top. The view from the top is as beautiful as horrifying, given the tetrahedron floor is made of iron nets (safe).
  • A great place for a walk. Wheelchair accessible. Parking is a bit off to the side. You can see all of 'Ruhrgebiet' almost. Other than the view, not much to do on a Halde though. 😉
