(4.4/5 based on 160+ reviews on the web)
The Botanische Gärten der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, also known as the Botanischer Garten Bonn, is a botanical garden and arboretum maintained by the University of Bonn. It is located at Meckenheimer Allee 171, Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and open except Saturdays in the warmer months; admission is free on weekdays. The gardens were originally castle grounds for the Archbishop of Cologne, dating to about 1340, which circa 1650 were fashioned into a renaissance garden. In 1720 the site was reworked as a baroque garden, setting the basic structure of today's garden, with the rococo Poppelsdorf Palace completed in 1746 by Archbishop Clemens August. When the University of Bonn was founded in 1818, its first garden director, Dr. Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck, began to focus the garden on scientific botany. By 1900 the garden was second only to Berlin's within Germany, but it was utterly destroyed in World War II. Reconstruction began after the war and was completed in 1979-1984 with the construction of two conservatories.Today the garden cultivates about 8,000 plant species, ranging from endangered local species from the Rhineland such as Lady's Slipper Orchids to protected species such as Sophora toromiro from Easter Island. Its outdoor gardens, containing about 3,000 species, are organized as follows:

  • Also for not Botanikbegeisterte a watchable place. Who in wonderful surroundings a little wants to dangle the soul, is right here. In the middle of the city a place of rest.

  • First of all: Will be charged a small entrance fee. For seniors discount. Advantage: It is thus not crowded. A very well maintained system built around the Poppelsdorfer Schloss with various greenhouses was waiting for us. At some point converted to 1700 in a baroque garden this garden with 10,000 or more plant species provides a source of knowledge with exactly marked and described plants. Here not only the knowledge of biology can be refreshed, but you can also relax, because quite a few benches invite you to linger and watch. Quite interesting the classification into different vegetation zones. From ancient Redwood trees and finds from the Rhine. Coal-fired station to moor, Heath and Mediterranean landscapes in miniature is also the eye thanks to many flowers included. An entertaining and informative journey through the vegetation, which provides the necessary relaxation also walkers in a "free" another area.

  • Beautiful grounds with various plants in the middle of the city on the Poppelsdorfer Schloß. Well maintained community with many rarities, treasures and natural beauty. The only Titanwurz far and wide blooms spectacularly every 1-3 years. 2016. last regular guided tours for a small price. In the new Café, you can enjoy delicious on the terrace overlooking the botanical gardens. A beautiful oasis in the city.

  • If you're in the area you have to visit the Botanischer Garten. There's a big outdoor area with hundreds, possibly thousands of trees, shrubs and flowers. Check out the topical room and the impressive cactus room. There's a highlight most springtimes with the 24-blooming of the Titanus flower - the largest in the world. It stinks, literally. It's famous for it! Watch out for the torchlight concert in August.Spet, a great evening for the kids.
  • The flowers bloom brilliantly in various colors. The setting is filled with plants from all over the world. The indoor tropical areas are fantastic to see the plants from the deepest parts of the jungle.
  • I think everybody should visit this! Entry is free, the garden offers a wide variety of plants and trees from all over the world.
  • Huge collection. Very interesting place to explore or just to spend a nice time
  • Not a free entry botanical garden, not exactly the prettiest either. Was disappointed with the garden.
