Sparrenburg, Bielefeld

4.5
Castle · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Originally constructed in the 1200s, Sparrenburg is a restored fortress--complete with dungeons--that sits atop Sparrenberg hill. Climb the 37 m (120 ft) tower for views of the city and countryside, then check out the original thick fortress walls, as well as the moat, an ancient well, and the underground dungeons. Enjoy a stroll around the grounds, or sample some local Westphalian cuisine at the restaurant. The grounds are open to visitors year-round, though the interior is only open in warmer months. Plan your visit to Sparrenburg and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Bielefeld driving holiday planner.

  • Great place to visit. View over the city is excellent. Nice afternoon walk. If you are in the area highly recommend.  more »
  • Beautiful historic place in Bielefeld. From there you can see the city of Bielefeld. There is also a restaurant and coffee shop.  more »
  • It is a great place to visit on a sunny day. The visit is free if you do not climb the tower. Normally, one is allowed to walk around the castle - which is interesting but not outstandingly unique.  more »

  • A nice and peaceful getaway from the city. Parking costs a small fee but the castle can be entered for free. Climbing up the tower (that costs a small fee) results in having a great 360 view of Bielefeld and the surrounding area. The stairs in the tower are mostly wooden. As most of the castle structure is destroyed, a guided tour (only in German i think) offers opportunity to go down below into the structure - highly recommended! There is a restaurant and a cafe on site.
  • A nice place to take some pictures and have a great view. The castle ground is free to visit. There is a 2 euro fee if you would like to climb to the top of the tower. A good place to spend 2 hours
  • Magnificent view over Bielefeld and a romantic setting. They also have a good restaurant (pricey) and a less expensive shop, selling refreshments. The public toilet - yes, there is a thing like that in Germany - is near the entrance of the restaurant.
  • Nice Castle, don't forget to take the guided tour, it takes you to the tunnels under the Castle
  • A silent peaceful place. There is a bar up there which is really nice. You can sit there and enjoy the view in silence.
