Spandau Citadel (Spandauer Zitadelle ), Berlin

3.9
One of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Europe, Spandau Citadel (Spandauer Zitadelle ) is a riverside fort originally designed to protect the town of Spandau. Built from 1559 to 1594, the citadel is made up of many buildings, including a gatehouse with a drawbridge, a residential palace, and the large Julius tower. Walk through the permanent exhibition on the history of the citadel in the former commander's house, or arrange for a tour of the bat-filled bat cellar. During summer, the fortress and its grounds hold numerous outdoor events and performances, including the renowned Citadel Music Festival. Been here with friends in August. We had 7 people, excursion in Russian ordered in advance by e-mail address found on the official website. Request written in English, but I think we can try in Russian. There are different themes to choose from excursions. Duration too different: 60, 90 and 120 minutes. We have chosen a general sightseeing tour, 120 minutes. And did not regret! Among other things, the Guide showed us the Casemates in the two bastions and a gunpowder warehouse. As I understood, without trips to get there impossible, since all doors open/closed and apart from us, there's no one there. Casemates in the bastion King-just super! Feeling that hit in the middle ages! Still very much a powder warehouse! We were told about the features of the construction of a warehouse, about how they kept the gunpowder and made the kernel. Generally very informative tour: you will tell and the characteristics of buildings and protect the fortresses and the history of Spandau. By the way, in Spandau, the Slavic tribes originally lived in 19 century "came" Napoleon, and at the end of the great patriotic war talks about the capitulation of the fortress led Soviet officers. So for us there are too many interesting things. Of course, such walks worthwhile to forego heels)))) If you are not the one that came out cheaper per person, bring your friends/acquaintances/travel companions: Citadel price per standard unit. Up to 10 people, if I'm not mistaken-110 euros, from 11 to 20 people-130 euros for 120 minutes. I think it is better to take 90 or 120 minutes or, as 60 minutes-very little. In general the staff was very friendly, email explained everything-told, so you can tour book in advance at a convenient time and in a calm atmosphere. We remained are very happy.

  • We got eloped here! Fantastic service, beautiful location, very kind and thoughtful workers. Highly recommended as a wedding location or event venue!
  • This place was really interesting. I think it is not worth to go inside museums. Only cannon museum and commander museum were interesting. You suggest to go at the top of the tower.
  • Awesome historical place. You can go in and just pay for 4.5€ (2.5 € for student, it's relatively cheap for student compare to other museum in Berlin) You could see so many stuff in the museum and you can go to tower to see the beautiful scenery in that place.
  • Prophets of Rage were awesome here. Great venue
  • Lovely, great feel to it and love that you can get up to the walls easily. Great during easter for the festival too.

Where to stay in Berlin

The Kreuzberg neighborhood near the Oberbaumbrüke bridge is central and full of Berlin icons: street art, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery, and a proliferation of cafes. Friedrichshain is another option with a hip vibe due to the students who congregate at its cafes and galleries. Consider Mitte as a historic home base. Mitte is the area where almost all of Berlin's well-known buildings are located, and it is within walking distance of Alexanderplatz. For a peaceful residential area, try Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf where the streets are lined with boutiques and quiet coffee shops.
