Soviet War Memorial, Berlin

4.2
One of the central war memorials of Germany, Soviet War Memorial commemorates the 80,000 Soviet soldiers who perished in the Battle of Berlin in 1945. Just steps away from the Brandenberg Gate in Berlin's Tiergarten, this memorial was built only months following the battle and the capture of the city. Two T-34 tanks sit aside the bronze statue of a Red Army soldier, while large columns bear the names of fallen soldiers. An outdoor museum just behind the memorial shows photographs from its construction. • So this isn't that we'll known of a site in Berlin. It's overshadowed by the victory colum and Brandenburg Gate of which it lies between. This is touching. They played a huge role in history and they ...  more »
  • The toll, which paid the ordinary soldiers, to stop the Nazi regime, should be remembered quietly. Where the Russians at the time took the materials to erect such a Memorial, so soon after the war simply refer to the information panels behind the monument, to the Park. Pay tribute to the dead and come closer.

  • Very good, do it with guide, in the entrance are two Russian tanks that were the first to enter Berlin, according to the Soviets, then there is all over a wall with inscriptions and on the back is the indicative in German, Russian and English, which means every thing. Interesting!

  • In the heavy fighting during the last days of the war in April and May of 1945,seventy thousand people were killed in just ten days in Berlin alone: more than 22,000 Soviet soldiers and 20,000 German soldiers, as well as more than 30.000 civilians. More than 200 burial and memorial sites in Berlin recall the victims of war and of Nazi Regime This war monument was built by the Soviet Union in 1945 to commemorate its war dead, particularly the 80,000 soldiers of the Soviet Armed Forces who died during the Battle of Berlin in April and May 1945. It is only few meters away from Reischstag (the German Parliment). Part of the marble for the monument was taken from Reich Chancellery, the proposed head quarters building of 3rd Reich. After the division of Germany, this monument happened to be in West Berlin in British territory . All through the periods of cold war, it was properly maintained, guarded and protected from angry West Berliners by the British Army
  • Great WWII Memorial for USSR Army who fell in the battles. It was build in 1945, in monumental realism style.
  • Really cool memorial, nice architecture, just a couple mins walk from the Brandenburg Gate. You can see the first tank to enter Berlin and behind is the cemetery, if your interested in history, its a must visit!
  • 一將功成萬骨枯! I was told Soviet Union had the most casualties in the WWII, somewhere around 26-27 million or half of the total casaulties in the war. My respect to the Soviet soldiers!
  • A place to remember and pay tribute to sacrifice in the face of tyranny.
