Soviet War Memorial, Berlin

4.2
One of the central war memorials of Germany, Soviet War Memorial commemorates the 80,000 Soviet soldiers who perished in the Battle of Berlin in 1945. Just steps away from the Brandenberg Gate in Berlin's Tiergarten, this memorial was built only months following the battle and the capture of the city. Two T-34 tanks sit aside the bronze statue of a Red Army soldier, while large columns bear the names of fallen soldiers. An outdoor museum just behind the memorial shows photographs from its construction. • So this isn't that we'll known of a site in Berlin. It's overshadowed by the victory colum and Brandenburg Gate of which it lies between. This is touching. They played a huge role in history and they ...  more »
  • The toll, which paid the ordinary soldiers, to stop the Nazi regime, should be remembered quietly. Where the Russians at the time took the materials to erect such a Memorial, so soon after the war simply refer to the information panels behind the monument, to the Park. Pay tribute to the dead and come closer.

  • Very good, do it with guide, in the entrance are two Russian tanks that were the first to enter Berlin, according to the Soviets, then there is all over a wall with inscriptions and on the back is the indicative in German, Russian and English, which means every thing. Interesting!

  • Soviet memorial for the Russian soldiers who were killed or wounded in the battle for Berlin in 1945. There were massive casualties on both sides and most of Berlin was reduced to rubble. Some Russian soldiers took revenge for German atrocities against civilians in their advance towards Moscow. Looting, killing of civilians and wholesale rape and murder of German women took place during the Soviet advance through Germany and particularly in Berlin. Because of this, the memorial was not popular with Berliners. However this monument is well worth visiting. Information on the events can be seen at the back of the memorial. Examples of Russian heavy weapons are on display.
  • Breath taking sculptures. We actually found it while walking around Tiergarten square. It was a great surprise. Goosebumps.
  • The Soviet war memorial was fantastic, flowers, decorations, etc. It is really an iconic place to visit in Tiergarten,Berlin.5 stars.
  • So wheres the german memorial for the young men and women who sacrificed themselves for the fatherland. This is nothing more then a war trophy that should be moved back to russia.
  • My second visit. Loved it again.
