Soviet War Memorial, Berlin
(4.3/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web)
One of the central war memorials of Germany, Soviet War Memorial commemorates the 80,000 Soviet soldiers who perished in the Battle of Berlin in 1945. Just steps away from the Brandenberg Gate in Berlin's Tiergarten, this memorial was built only months following the battle and the capture of the city. Two T-34 tanks sit aside the bronze statue of a Red Army soldier, while large columns bear the names of fallen soldiers. An outdoor museum just behind the memorial shows photographs from its construction. Add Soviet War Memorial and other attractions to your Berlin trip itinerary using our Berlin vacation planner.

  • It is one of three Soviet war memorials in Berlin; not the biggest, but perhaps is the most visited because it is located in the city centre, along the Straße des 17. Juni (the long avenue that cuts through the Tiergarten Park to the Brandenburg Gate to the Ernst-Reuter-Platz). Solemn and impressive as all Soviet monuments, instills in the mind at the same time a quiet stillness and an anxiety full of significance. The horror of war is hidden beneath the words "eternal glory to the heroes who fell".

  • History is definitely written by the winners. This place is a must! The scale is impressive and it somehow keeps a solemn, sad atmosphere. Totally recommended.
  • Very impressive and beautiful. Very well maintained. Not on the normal tours, but you have to see this!
  • Stunning Soviet era Brutalist architecture commemorating soldiers who fell during the Battle of Berlin in 1945. There are 16 stone sarcophagi that line both sides, with relief carvings of military scenes and quotations from Joseph Stalin, on one side in Russian, on the other side the same text in German. The scale of the monument must be experienced in person to be truly appreciated.
  • Really nice place to go for a walk and relax, it is a quiet place. Unfortunately some parents do not realize that this place is actually a Russian war cemetery! So please do not let your kids think this is a playground, be respectful!!! Just because you cannot see any headstones it does not mean it's a playground.
  • Super impressive memorial to the Soviet soldiers in WW2. Very cool to walk around and take pictures while also serving as a very sobering reminder of both the extreme size and power that the Soviet Union used to have and also of how much of a role they played in WW2. Go at sunset for really amazing pictures!
